Classy gelding has an ‘effect’ of Carter

“He’s a beautiful horse. Bob told me about him and said he’d be really casual in the warmup and he was exactly that,” driver Carter Dalgety said after extending The Lazarus Effects winning sequence to three.

After the gate left the 2400 metre mark Dalgety was left parked with the Bob Butt trained gelding, when Bobbies Rock blazed forward.

“Bob is great to drive for. He said ‘do whatever you want, don’t panic because he’s very fast.’ I let them do their thing early.”

With a lap to run Dalgety took the four year old to the top and from there it was game over with The Lazarus Effect beating Hacksaw Ridge by a length and a quarter.

The winning time was 2-54.8.

“He did it really well. The time was a little bit scary because he absolutely jogged it and he’s not blowing much, so that’s pretty pleasing. He just knocked off a bit but he still had the plugs in. Even after the line when they got close to him he took off again.”

After the run Dalgety was full of promise for the unbeaten four year old.

“I think he’s a very good horse who’s on the way up. He’s lovely gaited. I think if you wanted to you could really hum out of the gate. He’s got speed that not many horses have and I think he’s going to have a big year.”

The win was one of three for Dalgety. His other winners were Sheila Laxon and Erratic.

The Lazarus Effect which is raced by the Alabar Racing Syndicate 2022, is out of Brook Art, an unraced Art Major mare who’s a half-sister to The Dorchester (Mach Three). He won five of his seven starts and set a New Zealand record at Ashburton, running the 2400 metre mobile in 2-52.5. The record stood for seven years until it was broken by Life Of Art in November last year.
