In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – they’ve all got one thing in common now – they’re race winners!
Winton 1st August
Petite Trixton (Trixton – Petite Royal) Clinging on to win a deserved maiden victory at start number 9, Petite Trixton prospered from a sound drive from Brent Barclay- the reinsman making an initial mid-race move to the front of the race and taking a late trail to enable a late passing lane bid from the 4yr-old mare. The late challenge from Stella Bay meaning the margin of victory was just over a head at the line. Petite Trixton had recently impressed at Addington, running third in behind My Royal Break in early June.
Petite Trixton is the first winner out of the monarchy mare in Petite Royal, herself a 3-time winner.
Petite Trixton is guided to victory up the passing lane
Tua Lipa (Sweet Lou – Tara Delight) The second maiden winner of the day, this Shane Matheson trained runner impressed with a strong 2.59 run over the 2400m mobile event. Early gatespeed proving a great advantage once again with Kristin Green electing to use the early speed and then obtain a trail for the last lap of the race, from there Tua Lipa showed a nice turn of foot to run down The Next Best Thing late.
Dam Tara Delight was unraced but has kicked goals as a mother, her first foal being the exciting Tango Tara a 17-time winner that included the Gr2 Crown Graduates Pacer Free For All at Melton.
Sidorova (Always B Miki – Isinbayeva) A timely victory for a filly out of an Olympic champion – at least a namesake anyway! Sidorova had threatened to win a race early in 2024 and, racing in a fresh state on Thursday, duly made it win number 1 at start number 7. Sidorova produced a nice last furlong down the middle of the track to score narrowly from the Telfer trained Mandala with Mind Philly completing the trifecta.
The Gray trained runner is well bred, her dam Isinbayeva won 5 times has now left 3 winners from her three foals, Sidorova joining Alison Stokke (Bettor’s Delight) and The Mighty Mondo (He’s Watching) as race winners.
Sidorova scores late at Winton
Addington 2nd August
Torquay Street (Father Patrick – Lough Neagh) The money was on and the money was on the right horse too! Torquay Street, returning after racing in group company last time in, showed that sort of quality when rounding up race rivals in the 1st maiden trot of the night at Addington on Friday, the Williamson trained runner pouncing late after taking a trail behind the Bronson Munro trained Kiss Me Kate with a lap to go.
Torquay Street should be able to go on with things when looking at her breeding, the filly is out of the smart Lough Neagh, the mother to the likes of Lough Beg (5 wins) Arboe (7 wins) and Ima Bourbon Girl (8 wins) -it’s the family of the stars Cullens Creek (Christian Cullen) and Harnetts Creek (Sokys Atom)
Torquay Street goes from racing in Group company to winning a maiden when presented fresh.
Tactical Bid (Tactical Landing – Habibti Sadie) The tactical play was to go to the front and never look like getting beaten at Addington for this runner on Friday night. After a late break in behind Midnight Diamond when on debut, Robbie Close and Tactical Bid got things right in the second on the card, steaming away from the race rivals to salute in emphatic style. It’s another winner for the sire Tactical Landing with Wilma’s Boy probably the most notable performer by the sire out of the small number of his progeny to have won races here.
Tactical Bid is a close relation to race winners Magic Dash (6 wins) and Son Of The Cleaner (2 wins) while Grandam Ten To One won six and went on to mother the Dominion Handicap winner in Habibi Inta among others.
Adored Dreamer (Always B Miki – Adore To Our Dreams) If you’re looking for royally bred types then look no further. Adored Dreamer, impressive at recent workouts and trials, was sent out a hot favourite in the third at Addington, the punters proved right on the money with the Steve and Amanda telfer trained runner notching up an effortless victory in a smart 2.25.9 over the 1980m mobile trip.
Adored Dreamer has previously raced in Gr1 company in September of last year. The win adds to the growing tally of winners out of Adore To Our Dreams, her progeny including the star Akuta (Bettor’s Delight) the winner of numerous Gr1 titles including the Harness Million 2YO and Sires Stakes titles of 2021.
Adored Dreamer proves too tough from a parked position
Betterthancash (Art Major – Betterthankaty) Surprising them all from a nice sit in the running line Betterthancash found the line betterthananythingelse in the 5th of the night out of Addington, the Todd trained runner showing a nice turn of foot to get over the top of race leader in Five Crowns late.
Betterthancash is out of the Betterthancheddar mare in Betterthankaty, a 3-time winner.
Major Henry (Sky Major – Caitlyn Franco) Major Henry had to be major tough to see off his race rivals in the 9th out of Addington, the now Wederell trained runner was coming out of a Sunday effort behind Memphis Blaster so was fit enough to run the field along and outstay them all – that despite a closing effort from Franco Elvis late. The win for Major Henry coming up after some 13 prior starts. Dam Caitlyn Franco has now left her first winner, Major Henry being her first foal.
Alexandra Park 2nd August
Predator (Captaintreacherous – Fellasamongstabeauty) A maiden winner at decent each-way odds.
A predatory disposition likely proved the difference in the second out of the park, the Reid trained runner scoring over the race favourite in Upstage. The turnaround in recent form secured against some bad luck in recent travels to Cambridge which saw a 9th and 5th placings added to a prior 2nd in behind Auctioneer in late June. Predator is out of race winner Fellasamongstabeauty, the mother to a currently competitive individual in Dancing Desire (A Rocknroll Dance)
Predator spears out to lead and win at Alexandra Park
Miss Bebe (Pegasus Spur – Paramount Bliss) It took a while to ramp up down the outer but Miss Bebe got going late to score in the 7th of the night at Alexandra Park. The late spurt enough to see off Boss Jo, who had moved into the race in a similar manner over the last furlong. The win from Miss Bebe coming after a strong 2nd placing when last produced earlier in the month.
The win gives dam Paramount Bliss yet another winner, her progeny also includes the impressive 8-time winner in Miss Blissful (Pegasus Spur) and Quik Barbie, a 5-time winner by Quaker Jet.
Addington 4th August
Waterholes Road (Sky Major – Em Ay) A surprise to some, at least those that let this Negus trained runner drift out to the outsider odds, Waterholes Road showed a willing nature, making good strides down the outer in a small field in the first of the day at Addington, mastering leader Woodlea Diamond late to score at $25/1 – the win being the first time the son of Sky Major had placed in a career that, up until Sunday, has seen 8 starts without worrying the scorers.
Waterholes Road is the first winner out of 4-time winner Em Ay.
Lady Vincent (Vincent – Christians Blue Lady) A deserved win after some consistent results over the last month or so. Lady Vincent, coming off a strong 3rd placing behind Memphis Blaster last week, made every stride a winning one on Sunday, proving too strong over a short course mobile to win from Destiny’s Dream and Girlshavtime. The win sees dam Christians Blue Lady maintain a 100% winners record as a mother, her other winners being Blue Chip Delight (Bettor’s Delight) and Blue Rock Dancer (A Rocknroll Dance)
Lady Vincent proves too tough for them in the third of the day out of Addington on Sunday.
