In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – they all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Addington 15thĀ May
Very Majestic (Majestic SonĀ – Very Persuasive) Needing no time at all to make an impact on track, Very Majestic strode to the lead with a lap to go in the 3rd of the night at Addington and never looked back, scoring a sound victory over Penelope Paul and Pandemic. The wins continued the winning form shown at recent trails and workouts. Very Majestic is the first winner out of Very Persuasive (Pegasus Spur)Ā a 3-time winner herself
Sofia Rose (SportswriterĀ – All Time Glory) The winning writing was seemingly on the wall for this White trained runner after a strong second in behind Post Painter last start – and so it was with the daughter of Sportswriter taking out the 4thĀ of the night over Lady Vincent and Ambleside Drive. The win seeing the White stable past 150ā000 in seasonal earnings. Dam All Time Glory has done a great job as a mother, leaving the likes of Crackamoa (Real Desire) an 11-time winner, and the exciting Dalton Shard who placed 2ndĀ in the NZ Country Championship Final only last week.
Biggles (Tintin In Amerca – Jill Ireland) A model of consistency thatās now a race winner. Biggles had done everything but win a race over the course of his short career, multiple 2ndĀ placings meaning a winning turn was never too far away. This time the Murdoch trained runner outlasted a late passing lane bid of Heaven to score the maiden victory in 2.32.7 over the 2000m stand. Breeding boffins may well know that this is the family of the impressive Charles Bronson (Christian Cullen), winner of the 4YO Championship of 2008 at Forbury Park when beating out Bon Ton Boy and Mr Molly.
Biggles survives a late effort from Heaven to prevail at Addington.
Cambridge 16thĀ May
Grace N Elegance (Pegasus SpurĀ – Frances Ross) Showing plenty of both grace and elegance this Brian and Gareth Hughes trained runner showed up race rivals to score her maiden victory at race start number 6 on Thursday night. The win coming after consistent efforts in recent times including three 4thĀ placings from the prior 5 starts. Out of a race winning mare, Grace N Elegance is a 1/2 sister to the 5-time winner in Escargo. The family is best known through the race track successes of the Gr1 placed Uncle Petrika (Britewell)
Ā Grace N Elegance shows both in winning at Cambridge
Ima Sportyangel (Sportswriter – Armed Angel) Saluting for the Jason Teaz stable, Ima Sporty Girl was asked to step things out from the front of the field in the third of the night at Cambridge, never being caught in the run to the line despite the efforts of Narobi who had sat in the trail of the leader throughout the 2200m mobile trip. The win coming after some strong 2ndĀ placings at the track towards the end of last year. Ima Sportyangel is the first winner left by the Mach Three mare Armed Angel.
Addington 17thĀ May 17, 2024
Wild Irish Rose (Sweet Lou – Dudinkaās Angel) Pouncing on the speed and then making the most of a passing lane bid to win, Wild Irish Rose carried on from sound efforts behind Jukebox Gypsy and Pioneer to snare her maiden win at start number 4. The breeding here really does catch the eye with Wild Irish Rose being a sibling to two Australian performers in Perfectly Ideal (American Ideal)Ā a 17-time winner, and Delightful DudeĀ (Bettors Delight), a winner of 18 from 89.
Alexandra Park 17thĀ May
Always A Porsche (Always B Miki – Ann Other Porsche) Looking a little like a porsche with the way he pulled away from race rivals, Always A Porsche made up for some poor manners in his first couple of starts to emphatically win his maiden at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The victory never in doubt despite having to sit parked out for much of the last lap. The 3 and 1/2 length victory suggesting thereās plenty of potential to add to his winning tally in times to come. Out of a prolific North American winner, Always A porsche gives Ann Other Porsche an additional win as a mother – her recent speed merchants include Red TerrorĀ (Mach three)Ā and Omar SharifĀ (Shark Gesture)
Ā Always A Porsche looks like one in winning at Alexandra Park
Invercargill 18thĀ MayĀ
Timmy Turtle (Skyvalley – Easy Option)The turtle gets the prize. The Brett Gray runner, well supported on the tote, made the most of things in the third of the day out of Invercargill, clearing out with Rewiri Hill over the final 400m to set up a winning bid down the middle of the track, the victory coming off the back of a debut 5thĀ at Winton on the 11th of May. By Sky Valley, Timmy Turtle is the second winner left by the Great Success mare in Easy Option, the first being Easy Count (Imperial Count)
Fabricate (Vincent – Arancia) Upsetting favoured runners, Fabricate made the most of a favourable draw, making an early bid to lead and then trail throughout the 2200m mobile trip, a late burst up the passing lane enough to see off the race favourite in Gems Delight by over a length. The victory, at start #15 was a progression from a 2ndĀ placing on the 11th of May in behind Franco Sailor. Dam Arancia won 4 races from her 37-race day starts, kicking on to leave the 9-time winner in Miss Auckland (Auckland Reactor)Ā as her first foal
Fabricate uses the passing lane to score at Invercargill
Sodoyahavtime (Art Major – Musthavtime) Another maiden winner for Brett Gray. Sodoyahavtime, sent out favourite for the 6th of the day, duly delivered, just lasting to secure a short decision over the closing Havarti Arden. Sodoyahavtime was previously placed in the Gr2 Kindergarten Stakes of 2023 behind Vessem – hence why the animal was sent out favourite here. By Art Major Sodoyahavtime is the first foal and winner out of the American Ideal mare in Musthavtime who was unraced.
Rangiora 19th May
Le Twist (Sweet Lou – Spandau Ballet) Making the most of a good initial sit off the speed and followed by a mid-race move to the lead, Le Twist proved a little too strong for race rivals in the 1stĀ of the day out of Rangiora. The second favourite winning at 5/1 while covering the 2000m distance in 2.28.7. Le Twist had previously placed 3rdĀ at Winton on the 11th. Le Twist is the first winning foal out of Spandau Ballet with the damline tracing back to the class producer in Impish (Falcon Seelster), mother to The Fascinator (Bettorās Delight) and CrackabellaĀ (Bettorās Delight)
Radha (Always B Miki – Reklaw) One to watch for the future, the impressive Radha made it a winning debut at Rangiora with John Dunn and the son of Always B Miki besting rivals after a mid-race move to the parked position some 800m out from home. The run followed on some eye-catching performances at recent trials and workouts. As far as breeding goes Radha has plenty of it, a 1/2 brother Rishi (Bettorās Delight) was victorious in the Smoken Up Sprint of 2020 when seeing off Major Times and Code Black. Akuta, a true star, is also from this family through an unraced mare in Adore To Our DreamsĀ (Christian Cullen)
Radha looks to have plenty of promise after this strong debut victory on Sunday
