In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – theyāve all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Cambridge 20thĀ August
Im Not The Maid (A Rocknroll DanceĀ – Bronze Lady) Collecting a maiden victory in the third on the card at Cambridge, Im Not The Maid and Andre Poutama led from the start until the very end, prevailing by a little under a length from a closing Cupids Arrow and Power N Glory, the win came after a consistent start to the career with a previous 4thĀ and 2ndĀ placing top with the win. Im Not The Maid continues the stunning broodmare success of Bronze Lady, her progeny includes the 15-time winner in Bronze Destiny (Live Or Die)Ā and the 28-time winner in Bronze SeekerĀ (Mach Three)
Im Not The Maid delivers a front running win.
Addington 23rd August
Iām Rockin (Johny Rock – Iām Joe King)This Regan Todd trained runner did a little rocking himself on Friday night, blasting out favoured rivals at 15/1 to snare his maiden victory at start #4 – the victory came after steaming home in behind Teddy the Terror last week for 3rd. Iām Rockin is the first winner out of the Art Major mare in Iām Joe King, herself unraced.
Iām Rockin pounces from a nice mid-race sit to win the 1stĀ of the night out of Addington
Without You (Captain CrunchĀ – River Polka) A winning debut for this daughter of Captain Crunch. Blair Orange generally knows how to dictate a race and, in the 4thĀ of the night at Addington he did exactly that, stealing some soft sectionals to secure a solid enough victory. Without You had previously placed at workouts and trials, form that meant the Purdon trained runner went out as a hot favourite.
Dam River Polka was a fine mare, winning 11 from 50, sheās also kicked on as a mother leaving Polka Hot Dance (10 wins) and Polka Delight (15 wins) as her first two foals.
Alexandra Park 23rdĀ August
Infamee (Captaintreacherous – Sweet On Me) With Adore Me as the grandam you could well argue that Infamee was the best bred maiden winner from the last week of racing. Despite some rough steps over the concluding stages Infamee and Josh Dickie did enough to see off the challenges and post his maiden win at start #2.
Dam Sweet On Me was a star herself, winning 6 from 7 while picking up a brace of Gr1 titles, those being the NZ Sires Stakes Fillies Champs and 2YO Diamond titles of 2019.
Infamee, royally bred, salutes at Alexandra Park.
Rangiora 25thĀ August
Penelope Hall (Andover HallĀ – Mariposa) A deserve win for a horse thatās been showing enough to pass maiden grade for some time. Penelope Hall had to do things tough to bring up victory #1, sitting parked for much of the last lap and finding plenty over the last furlong to win by some 3 lengths over Solemn Son and Shoemaker. Ā Dam Mariposa won 2 from her 32 starts with Penelope Hall being her second winner as a mother after Prestissimo (The Pres)Ā achieved the milestone as her second foal.
Penelope Hall outstays them to win at Rangiora.
Moose Morowski (Art Major – Minnie Moose) The moose that found its feet at Rangiora. The Regan Todd trained runner had previously been unplaced from 5 raceday starts but that all changed on Sunday as Blair Orange urged Moose Morowski to lift over the final 400m, beating out Verducci and Fear Gogh late.
This a fine pacing family, dam Minnie Moose won 8 times and left the impressive Funatthebeach (Somebeachsomewhere)Ā as her first foal, heād go on to win some 45 times including caputuring a brace of Gr23 titles on New Zealand soil.
Hoof It Hagrid (Andover Hall – Miss Lovalot) An impressive maiden winner for the Bagrie barn – and well bred too. John Dunn weaved a little bit of magic late here with Hoof It Hagrid, getting the best of Clovelly Hill in the shadows of the post to bring up the win. The win came after sound trial and workout form behind some nice horses, notably Mighty Logan who put in a strong effort to win a race at Addington on Friday night.
The bloodlines here are very strong to say the least with Harold Smith and Kawhi both being full brothers. The wider family includes the trotting star Lotalov.
Hoof It Hagrid comes late to snare a debut win at Rangiora.
Rakero Ice (Sweet LouĀ – Ima Single Girl) The most impressive maiden winner of the week, Rakero Ice would have been the only horse in the winning photo as the filly cleared out from race rivals to score by some 8 lengths in the 5th of the day. Gavin Smith an impressed passenger no doubt as he notched another runaway win.
The victory continues a strong run for the Bamford stable. Rakero Ice is the first winner out of the Bettorās Delight mare Ima Single Girl.
Rakero Ice wins by the length of a cricket pitch or two.
