In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – theyāve all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Kaikoura 4th November 4, 2024
Solemn Son (Majestic Son – Ginas Brightest) After putting in some solid displays of late Solemn Son and Kyle Cameron weren’t going to take no for an answer in the first out of Kaikoura on Monday, leading the field for much of the 2400m event and pulling away over the concluding stages to score impressively at start number #28. The career to date had been one of small and consistent improvements with 3 placings from the prior 5 starts suggesting a winning turn wasnāt too far away.
Solemn Son is out of the grand producer in Ginas brightest, mother to Bright Glow, Ginas Majesty and Gin Rummy among other.
Selsey Anne (Lather Up – Ariadne Lavra) Recent workout and trial efforts had suggested that Selsey Anne was in possession of quite the motor and, on Monday, she showed every bit of it, getting over the top of a small field in the 2nd of the day to win impressively on debut.
The Jones trained filly looks one to follow too with dam Ariadne Lavra already leaving the progressive Australian based Minos (Bettorās Delight) as her first foal.
Selsey Anne shows too much speed for race rivals at Kaikoura.
Manuwatu 4th November
Doo You Want Me (Captain Crunch – Delightful Lana) Do you want me to win? Yes. Thatās what the punters wanted and thatās what they got in the second of the day at Manuwatu, the Doody trained runner showing good gate-speed and leading up the field over the 2000m mobile trip. The run to the line was sound enough too, holding off Amazing Captain in the run home.
This is a celebrated dam-line with the family reaching back to Coo Doo.
Doo You Want Me leads all the way at Manuwatu.
Delta Kilo (Sweet Lou – Star Of Heaven) Finding the front and winning for the House stables, Delta Kilo looked the goods as the 4yr-old delivered on some early promise to take out the 3rd of the day out of Manuwatu. The recent front-running form on grass hadnāt quite delivered but the change of scenery to the North proving the change that was needed for the son of Sweet Lou.
Delta Kilo is well bred with dam Star Of Heaven leaving the star pacer Ideal Star (American Ideal) a winner of some 30 races across both Australasia and North America.
Oamaru 7th November
One More For Heather (One Over Da Moon – Leithe Ellen) Drawn #1 in the book in the first of the day One More For Heather made good on some of the strong trial and workout form she had shown prior to getting to the races proper, winning well after a leisurely run on the markers. The winning turn came up at start #7 with a number of 4ths early in the career suggesting a victory wasnāt too far away.
One More For Heather is out of a celebrated trotting family with One More For Heather joining the likes of Light Of Da Moon, One Yankee Ginga and One Yankee Hall as winners out of the Muscles Yankee mare in Leithe Ellen.
One More For Heather takes the passing lane to victory at Oamaru
Franco Chaplin (Ultimate Machete – Cracker Anvil) Franco Chaplin had always shown ability but Franco Chaplin was getting in his own way with mid-race mistakes. That all changed at Oamaru with the Waldron trained runner doing things right having enough speed to catch Ari On Safari in the run home.
Best performers from this family include Anvil On Fire (Presidential Ball) Incredible Anvil (Mach Three) and Anvil Revival (In The Pocket) all of which are out of grandam Waihemo Rainship.
Sweet Raine (Sweet Lou – Black Raine) With placings behind Baileys Bay, Allbetsroff and Ocean Of Tears recently Sweet Raine went around as one of the leading chances in the 3rd of the day out of Oamaru and the money was right on the mark with the L OāReilly trained runner proving far too good for race rivals, a mid-race press to the lead meaning the filly was in the prime position to bring her talents to the fore.
A stern bid of Fear Gogh was seen off over the final furlong to score nicely. Dam Black Raine now has two winners to her name with the first being Lucca.
Rangiora 8th November
Odina (Muscle Hill – Paramount Faith) Impressing from the front of the race in the first of the day out of Rangiora, Odina did enough to see off a stern late bid from the Jones trained Tinkerbelle to score her first victory on the track at start #3.
The win came up after a second placing last time out behind Massive Merc. Odina has stacks of breeding and would have to be one of the better bred maiden winners in recent memory – sheās the full sister to star trotter Muscle Mountain, winner of 33 starts while Paramount Lady, a race winner by Tactical Landing, is also out of the mare.
Odina just sees off challenges at Rangiora
Kairaki Delight (Art Major – Lydiaās Delight) Coming from well off the pace in the second of the day, this Dunn trained son of Art Major scored as the 2nd favourite in the 2nd on the card at Rangiora .The first campaign had been one of consistency with Kairaki Delight accumulating 4 minor placings from 11 previous starts. This damline traces back to the mother of Party On (Bettorās Delight) in Beach Parade (Beach Towel)
Sacetas (Bettorās Delight – Scorcha) Another winner that carries plenty of breeding. Sacetas had been unlucky not to pick up a race prior to this Friday run around the Rangiora track.
The Bagrie trained runner has often been competitive against some strong company with minor placings coming behind Midnight Miki and Party Central in recent times. The front-running effort was a good one too with mid-race pressure coming from the Dunn trained Bettor Be Quick throughout the running.
Sacetas is out of the impressive Scorcha, a winner of 4 herself and sister to the 11-time winner in Major Fire (Art Major)
Alexandra Park 8th November
Aventador (Bettorās Delight – Aquileia) After a string of strong performances this Tate Hopkins trained runner impressed on Friday night, leading the small field of juveniles around and proving too strong in the run home to score by a little under a length over Beachbreak and Princess Lisa.
Out of the unraced Falcon Seelster mare Aquileia, Aventador is a full brother to the impressive Solid Gold who score 8 wins on NZ soil before continuing his winning ways on North American soil.
Aventador sees off race rivals at Alexandra Park.
Wyndham 10th November
Bubble Me (Downbytheseaside – Agree With Me) Another winner out of the Kirstin Green stable, Bubble Me impressed in the first of the day out of Wyndham on Sunday, proving too strong for race favourite Sweet Sue to score by a little under a length after leading throughout the 2400m mobile contest. Bubble Me fought hard int the run line suggesting this wonāt be the last winning run we see from the filly.
Bubble Me is the 2nd winner out of Agree With Me, the first being a younger 1/2 brother in I Got Chills.
Bubble Me kicks when asked at Wyndham.
Macandrew Markup (Net Ten EOM – Young Tegan) The sire Net Ten EOM continues to leave winners sporadically and you can add the name Macandrew Markup to that growing list. This Douglas trained runner ran away with the 2nd of the day, seeing off challenges by some 4 lengths to post a strong win at race day start #11.
Dam Young Tegan (In The Pocket) has met with some success as a mother leaving the 4-time winner Countess Of Arden and the 5-time winner Bhappy among other performers.
Aroha (Love You– Kurien) It hasnāt taken Aroha long to start enjoying the deep South after a recent move to the L Pearson stable with the 6yr-old mare scoring at Wyndham at just her 2nd start for the new stable. The win, off front marks, came at the expense of a host of rivals who were off handicaps, notably Practical Magic and Styrax who were both off 20m marks.
Aroha had previously operated out of the B Butt stable. Aroha is the first winner out of the Sundon mare in Kurien.
Aroha shows a bit of love for the Wyndham track, impressing on Sunday.
Waikaka Magic (Raging Bull – Mila Kunis) The son of Raging Bull proved to be all the rage on Sunday, scorching around the Wyndham track to score in 1.55.3 and win by over a length. The forward effort came after Sam Ottley sent the 2yr-old to the lead after some 300m and fought off the rivals in the run home. Waikaka Magic had previously placed 2nd behind the progressive Bettor fortune at Tuapeka in late October.
