In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – theyāve all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Addington 4th December
One For Jay (Sweet Lou – Bettorkeepthefaith) A juvenile filly that got under the guard a little in the second out of Addington on Wednesday, One For Jay, well driven by Kimberley Butt, scored well over Burnham Girl and Vinās Deal. The win trumped a 3rd placing in Helen Pope Fillies Classic at Gr3 level in June. One For Jay is the 3rd winner out the Bettorās Delight mare Bettorkeepthefaith.
One For Jay holds off challenges to score at Addington
Glance (Creatine – Some Direction) One royally bred maiden winner out of the Lynn And Justin Smith stable. With race favourite Bluey going a little rough with some 300m to go and Perfect Call being caught up in the backwash Glance sprung clear in the third of the night, coasting away to score a deserved victory at start #12.
Dam Some Direction was a celebrated trotting mare in her time, winning 25 times during her 167 start career – a win in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup among her victories.
Belmont Valor (Always B Miki – Belmont Fire) Another performer that had been threatening to win a race for some time,Belmont Valor score after a late bid down the middle to the Addington track. The short margin coming at the expense of both Fear Gogh and Shannon B. The Donna Williamson trained 5yr-old had previously placed 3 times from 10 race day starts, all of which had come up at Addington.
The best performer out of dam Belmont Fire would be the smart Belmont Major, a sub-1.50 miler in North America.
Addington 6th December
Sweet Tartan (Sweet Lou – Expressive Victor) Coming off a distant 10th behind Zarlini at Motukarara Sweet Tartan made the most of her gate-speed on Friday night, eventually trailing Lochdarragh for much of the 1980m mobile trip and launching a late bid to capture the 2nd of the night in tight margins. The win, at big odds of over 35/1, came after 7 previous starts with the daughter of Sweet Lou placing in 3 of those events.
Dam Expressive Victor left the 2-time winner Expressive Love as her first foal and now has a second winner to her name.
Artful Bromac (Art Major – Cindy Bromac) With form behind the star Marketplace this House trained juvenile stacked up well in the 10th of the night out of Addington – and he proved the best in the race, sitting parked over the late stages after a move to on the speed with some 900m to go in the short mobile event, from there Wilson House and the son of Art Major lifted to win well from La Concha and race leader Bettor Off.
This family has met with plenty of success in the past with dam Cindy Bromac winning 4 herself and the maternal line tracing back to include the mother of Attorney General in Classic Blue Jeans (Camluck)
Artful Bromac shows real ability at Addington
Alexandra Park 6th December
Debbie Lincoln (Lather Up – Yasmine Bromac) Another winner for the slick American sire in Lather Up. Debbie was another maiden winner who got under the guard of punters on Friday night, proving too good for a limited field in the 2nd of the night at odds of over 20/1. The win coming at the expense of Princess Gracy and Sunset Strip with a notable late scratching being the race favourite Twisted Sister.
Debbie Lincoln scores against a limited field at Alexandra Park
Rewiri Hill (Muscle Hill – Knapdale Girl) A maiden victory after 17 prior starts, a win in the 3rd of the night made it another victor from the Derek Balle barn. The 5yr-old had resumed in nice enough form, finishing 4th when produced fresh at the same track on the 22nd of November behind Loteria. This breed is known through the performances of both dam Knapdale Girl, a winner of 8, and her first foal in Full Noise, a winner of 7.
Geraldine 7th December
Wanna Play A Game (Tactical Landing – Wanna Play) Wanna Play A Game wanted to play the winning game when on debut at Geraldine on Saturday, the Mark Jones trained runner impressing from on the speed in the maiden trot to score well at each-way odds. The winning effort suggests thereās a few more wins in this well bred type. Dam Wanna Play won 5 from 32 and left the impressive Wanna Play With Me as her first foal.
Wanna Play scores at Geraldine.
General Rebeck (Sportswriter – Trikita) Those with manners were the ones you wanted to be on in the 3rd of the day out of Geraldine with this Gorrie trained, who had threatened to win a race in limited starts, doing the best work from the lead over the short course standing start event. J Cox and the son of Sportswriter proved too slick for the challenge of Greets in the run to the line with some distance back to Franco Elvis in third.
General Rebeck is the third winner from dam Trikita, the first two being Moon Angel (Stonebridge Regal) and Vyndetta (Art Official)
Titian Franco (Vincent – Thatcher Franco) With form behind both Zarlini and Nothing But You a winning turn looked likely for Titian Franco and, with a confident Sam Thornley in the sulky, the 3yr-old filly delivered a strong winning effort in the 5th on the card at Geraldine. The breed is known for its ability to race on grass with names like Franco Texas (8 wins) Uncle Chan (18 wins) and Franco Tim (3 wins) all out of the successful broodmare in Thatcher Franco.
Forbury Park 8th December
Tarragindi (Majestic Son – Kennyās Dream) Trotters seldom go around at $1.40 to win but this Williamson trained son of Majestic Son had been so impressive in his first foray into the racing game that a quote as short as that was to be expected – and he delivered well after an early gallop left him reeling at the rear of the maiden field. Despite that early issue a late cart into things over the final 400m meant a late burst down the outer of the track saw Tarraginid home impressively.
Tarragindi is from a celebrated breed with dam Kennyās Dream winning 8 herself while being a close relation to One Majic Kenny (Majestic Son) and King Kenny (Pegasus Spur)
Tarragindi scores despite an early gallop at Wingatui
Just Like Jagger (Vincent -Machjagger) Start her up! Start her up and sheāll never stop. Kristin Green may have another impressive juvenile on her hands in the form of Just Like Jagger. This 2yr-old filly took it to her older rivals in the 3rd of the day at Wingatui, sitting last for much of the race and storming home widest on the track to capture a win on debut. A performance of this nature suggests there’ll be plenty of addition wins in store.
In terms of breeding dam Machjagger who won 5 races herself and celebrated becoming a winning broodmare with the win. Distant relations include Darcee (Bettorās Delight) and Watch Me Now (Heās Watching) both having met the 1.50 mark in North America.
Just Like Jagger is certainly one to watch after this great debut win.
