Copy That has taken out the $25,000 Alabar 2021 Spring Cup at Alexandra Park tonight for harness racing trainer Ray Green. He was driven in his win tonight by regular North Island driver Maurice McKendry.
At the start of the race Copy That made a swift beginning and McKendry drove a masterful race in midfield on the son American Ideal, before popping out on the home turn and cruising to the line to win by slightly less than a length from a gallant Bad To The Bone who sat parked. Christenshavtime ran on well for third from a trailing position.
“He began good and got a good run and only did what he had to do in the straight, so I am very pleased,” McKendry said after the race.
Copy That ran the 2200m stand in a 2-00.4 mile rate and zipped home his last 800m in 56.2 seconds.
His next start on the road to the New Zealand Trotting Cup will likely be in the $50,000 Ashburton Flying stakes, depending on travel arrangements and the Covid situation, but the $25,000 Holmes D G at Alexandra Park 3 days prior is also a possibility for the speedy pacer.
Copy That is currently a $5.00 Fixed Odds third favourite for the NZ Cup behind Self Assured ($2.80) and South Coast Arden ($3.20).
