Southland harness racing two year old pacer D Mac (Downbytheseaside) has been sold and will race in Western Australia in future.

Trained by Brad Morris, the colt qualified at Central Southland Raceway earlier this month, winning his heat by three lengths.

“He was natural from day one. We just had to wait on him because we didn’t want to push him too early. We only had three runs off the place. He had one workout, one trial and one race. I still think he’s got plenty of improvement in him,” Morris said.

D Mac debuted on the same track thirteen days after he qualified. He sat parked for all of the race and was run down by Seaside Croft.

“He was racy for that first wee bit then he came back to me. I was more than happy with the way he settled, sat parked and he kicked on real good at the finish. After the line he wanted to keep going which is a good sign for the future.”

D Mac is named after All Black Damion McKenzie.

“He’s one of my wee boy Charlie’s favourite players.”

D Mac is out of the Washington VC mare Flashonbye which started nine times for Morris for two seconds and two thirds. One of her thirds was in the Group Three Nevele R Stakes at the Cheviot meeting.

“She also ran second to Jumpforjoy in 1-56.”

Flashonbye at stud has left Sporty Charlie the winner of five and Flashbytheseaside, a maiden who’s an older brother to D Mac.

“He’s (Flashbytheseaside) had four starts. He split a pastern in January. It’s on the mend so hopefully we can bring him back into work at the end of June. He’s more of a time horse.”

D Mac’s third dam Annmarlyn left good types in Can Annie Go (5) and Classy Topic (7).

Classy Topic was trained by Brad’s grandfather Ron who also trained Chipaluck which won nine races including the 1985 New Zealand Oaks, the Ladyship Stakes and the Methven Cup.
