In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look into those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – they’ve all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Winton 10th January
Without Comparison (Wishing Stone – Without Fear) Without Comparison proved to have no comparative rivals when scoring an impressive maiden victory. The Pearson trained runner is well bred – with her mother, Without Fear, claiming 6 wins herself. Other performers out of the dam include Never Fear (5 wins) and her brother in Frisson, who raced out of both OāReilly and Williamson barns before being exported to Australia – a Pinjarra Trotters Cup victory proved his best performance while racing there.
Robust Easton (Washington VC – Robsue) The Brian Norman trained runner scored his maiden over a mile distance in a smart time of 1.56.7. The win coming after 5 previously unplaced starts.
Vinita Rose (Vincent(AUS) – Crimson Glory) Previously trained by Terry McMillan, the Hoffman runner scored over race favourite Remission, posting 1.58.2 to score by a 1/2 length. The family is well known with dam Crimson Glory scoring 2 wins from her lifetime starts. Sudden Change, a prolific winner in both Australia and the United States, and The Crimson Prince, who has notched up some 10 wins on Australian soil, are notable performers of the wider family.

My Rocky Romance (Rock N Roll Heaven – Dreamy Romance) The romance might be rocky but the pacing gait is a winning one. The Kirstin Green runner showed good gatespeed to obtain a lead and then trail into the straight, finding late gaps and powering home to score an impressive fighting maiden victory. The debut win suggests another win might not be too far away. The star pacer Roymark features in the catalogue here being out of grandam Romantic II
Waikato 11th January
Iron Brigade (Art Major – Trigirl Brigade) The well-named Iron Brigade continued a winning habit for this family when scoring at Cambridge. Out of the 7-race winning mare in Trigirl Brigade, the 1/2 brother to Classie Brigade held off race rivals by a comfortable three lengths. The winning coming on the back on a 2nd place finish when first appearing on track in August of 2023.
Jeremiah (Lazarus – Flyover) Out of a class mare, Jeremiah impressed when scoring in a limited field. Flyover has proven a wonderful dam – multiple race winners Better Fly, Jordy, and Flyaway are all part of her story of motherhood. The fresh-up win from Jeremiah signals this horse could be one to follow throughout this campaign.
Nelson 12th January
Wallflower (Bettor’s Delight – Goodlookin Chick) The Dalgety trained runner backed up some good workout and race day form to score well in the 1st at Nelson. The daughter of Bettorās Delight had previously found the line well behind Moments Like This at Ashburton and was a strong winner from the front of the race for Carter Dalgety.
Ready Set Jet (Quaker Jet – Lochabella) Manners are key and Ready Set Jet showed plenty of them when scoring nicely at Richmond Park. The Bob Butt trained runner was on debut after showing some ability at workouts and trials. Ready Set Jet is a first foal.
Mary Lou (Sweet Lou-Edernay) Providing a local win at big odds, Mary Lou upset favoured runners to score her maiden victory after some 11 previous starts. With no previous form to speak of the Jonny Cox-driven mare pounced from a running line sit to master the race favourite Kaysans Rock in the shadows of the post. Mary Lou is out Edernay, a dam thatās produced successful performers Red Reactor, Call Security and Editorial.
All You Need Is Me (Captaintreacherous – Adore Me) If you looked at the race book and had any inkling about the breed then you would have seen this win coming from the dark side of the moon. The daughter of Adore Me, although racing greenly through parts of the run, got her pacing shoes on late to score well from a game Twista and Misty Blue. Thereās obviously plenty to like about the filly but thereās also a lot to live up to! Sweet On Me, Darling Me, Remember Me and Forever Me are all looking onā¦

Queen Of Swords (Bettor’s Delight – Queen Camille) Undefeated! A first win on debut. The Robert and Jenna Dunn trained runner looked like one to follow when scoring well in the first of the day from the track on Sunday. Showing early gate-speed to lead the field throughout, a slick 27.5 final sectional was enough to see the daughter of Bettorās Delight home over the White-trained Chica Bella. Queen of Swords is bred to go on with things – both Henry Hubert and Lambros are brothers.

HarmoniaĀ (Majestic Son – Laurelson) The Tomlinson-trained runner improved from a sound 4th on day one of the Nelson circuit to score on Sunday after showing manners along with a good turn-of-foot late. The win continues the grand trot being experienced by the bloodlines over time with Arabess and the great Amaretto Sun out of the granddam.
Kaysons Rock (A Rocknroll Dance – Snap Wilson) While run down late on Friday Kaysans Rock proved far too good from the top things on Sunday at Richmond Park. A 3-length win suggesting that there could be a few more wins in the Austin trained runner.
Gatecrasher (Bettor’s Delight – We Love To Party). Crashing through maiden grade. The Trent Yesberg runner was another to take the step up from a sound run on Friday, lifting late in a tight finish to score by a short margin over Twista for the Telfer stable. Gatecrasher will have to start winning at consistent intervals if heās to keep up with some of his near relationsā¦ his siblings include the impressive Just Dance, Coachella, Democracy and Dontdrinkthendrive.
