Champion Kiwi Dexter Dunn is returning to drive Down Under.
Dunn, who turned 35 on September 1, has landed the first slot ā that of Entain (Ladbrokes) ā in the new Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver harness racing Challenge to be run at Albion Park on February 21 and 22.
He is expected to be just part of the Kiwi flavour in the two-night, 20-race series with a couple of other top NZ drivers believed to be linked to successful slot applicants.
Since the series was unveiled a few months back, organisers Racing Queenslandās wish for it to stir strong international interest has come true.
Applications for one of the 10 slots in the Ultimate Drivers Challenge have come from all around the world.
Until now, those bidding for slots and the drivers they nominate have remained private.
Entain CEO, passionate harness owner and supporter Dean Shannon, set his sights on landing Dunn to drive in the Entain (Ladbrokes) slot from day one.
āWe are excited to be sponsoring such an exciting new concept as the Ladbrokes Drivers Challenge and from the start we wanted to help make it a truly international event,ā Shannon said.
āDexter was the top priority for our slot. Heās had so much success in the US, but heās also one of the greatest drivers NZ has seen and won lots of big races in Australia, too.
āIt looks like it will bring together some of the best drivers from all around the world.ā
Dunn drove 2226 winners in NZ and 55 in Australia before moving to the US to continue his career in 2018.
Significantly, Dunnās previous trips to Australia from NZ were to chase major races and his wins included two of the countryās biggest races, the Miracle Mile and Hunter Cup, on former superstar pacer Christen Me in 2015 and 16.
Dunnās deeds in NZ are legendary with 10 driving premierships, four junior driving titles and even a Canterbury Sportsman of the Year title.
Four Dan Patch awards and over 2000 wins later, Dunn has made quite a mark in the US.
Dunn is no stranger to Albion Park, the host track of Ultimate Driver Challenge, either.
Literally while packing his bags to move his life and career to the US in mid-2018, Dunn made a hit-and-run visit to Brisbaneās home of harness racing to drive Let It Ride to win Queenslandās biggest race, the Group 1 Blacks A Fake.
āIāve been there a few times, itāll be great to get back,ā Dunn said. āItās a quiet time of year here (US) in January and February, so it fits really well.
āIād heard some talk about this new driver series in Australia and pretty much straight away someone from Ladbrokes rang to ask if I was interested.
āItās certainly something different and to be bundled into two nights makes it easy to take it in.
āItās an honour to get the call-up and I canāt wait to be part of it and catch up with lots of people I know when I get down there.ā
The Ultimate Driver Challenge consists of 20 races across two nights for just 10 drivers at Albion Park with over $A250,000 in prize money up for grabs. First prize is $A100,000 and slot holders will receive $A1000 for each race win.
Applications for the nine remaining slots (Ladbrokes already had a slot), which cost $A20,000 each, closed on July 31.
When it was launched, champion North American drivers Tim Tetrick and Jody Jamieson were among those to endorse it.
Albion Park chief Ken Rutherford was thrilled to learn Dunn was a lock for the series.
“Dexter is an outstanding choice and fit for the inaugural Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver,” he said. “He covers so many markets, being a Kiwi whoās last win in Australia was at Albion Park in The Blacks A Fake in 2018 to now being one of the biggest names in North American harness racing.
“We are humbled by the interest from across the globe. We received several applications that were internationally focused ranging from North America to Europe along with applications from other Australian states and here in Queensland.
“All applicants indicated how they would promote the Ultimate Driver and harness racing in general which has provided the selection panel with plenty to think about ahead of announcing the other nine slot holdersā
“To ensure reach and engagement we are aiming to strike a balance between slot holders that are internationally, interstate and locally focused.”
The other successful slot holders will be announced September 18.
