Down Under winners with Carter Dalgety

Down Under driving brothers light up Kentucky.

Down under harness racing drivers Andrew and Todd McCarthy had an outstanding day at The Red Mile in Kentucky on Sunday. The brothers both won two races each on the big day of racing.

Todd was quick out of the gates when winning the first race on the program with Speed Away, a Father Patrick gelding. Trained by Jonas Czernyson the 3yo trotted the mile in 1:53.2.

For his next win he teamed up with down under trainer Brett Pelling for the $158,000 Open Pace. The down under duo lined up outstanding pacer Allywag Hanover. In a race where the sectionals made onlookers jaws drop. The field flew off the starting gates and opened up the first quarter in a hot 25.4 seconds. From there you would think they couldn’t pace any faster, but they did. The second quarter was paced in 25.3. Making the first half (800m) be run in 51.3 seconds. Yes that is correct, the field paced the first half in 51.3 seconds. With McCarthy and Allywag Hanover creeping closer, the remaining two quarters of the race were paced in 27.3. Straitening up the pair shot clear from rivals to pull away and win in a time of 1:46.4. The eye opening victory by the son of Captaintreacherous sealed him as one of the top pacers Open pacers in North America.

Andrew McCarthy saved his show till late, winning the last two races on the program. But they were the ones that counted. In the 3yo Pace racing for $500,000 he sat behind the Tony Alagna trained Abuckabett Hanover. Being patient early, the pair settled around fifth spot on a very moderate tempo. Passing the half in a comfortable 55.2 the moves soon came and they came hot. When straightening in it was anybody’s race. With multiple runners across the track Andrew got the best out of his pacer by crossing the wire in first place to take home the big prize. The son of Betting Line clocked 1:49.4 in an extremely competitive finish. 

The race to follow saw Andrew head out onto the racetrack behind the favoured runner Jujubee in the $561,000 3yo Trot. The pair showed aggression early when spearing across the face of the field to lead. McCarthy then elected to stayed there with the son of Creatine and trot out fast sectionals. Passing the half in 54.2, the Greg Wright Jr trained square gaiter was then allowed more rein when entering the stretch and cleared right away to put a space on rivals and win in a time of 1:49.3. A super impressive mile from a 3yo trotter sired by Creatine. 

A massive achievement by Andrew McCarthy to win two big features on the day totalling just over $1 million in stake earnings for his efforts. A day to remember for the McCarthy family.
