Down Under Winners with Carter Dalgety

Records broken in big harness racing night at the Meadowlands

The racetrack was in red hot condition for Saturday night’s racing at the Meadowlands. Evidence of this was shown when the record for the fastest last quarter to be run in a race was broken, by more than one horse.

It started with down under trainers Brett Pelling’s exceptional pacing mare Test Of Faith (Art Major). Driven by David Miller the mare had the task of chasing the leader and eventual winner of the race Mikala (Always B Miki), who set the pace of a 25.0 second, last quarter and 1:48.3 overall.

Test Of Faith came from behind runners and was clocked running her last quarter in an unthinkable 24.3 seconds, to finish in second place. 

A few races later and more features of a down under trainer and drivers was when Bulldog Hanover (Shadow Play) took victory.

The Noel Daley and Dexter Dunn pair were at the helm of this pacer who recorded the win in an overall time of 1:47.0 and paced his fourth quarter of the mile in 24.4 seconds. Then also in the same race the Todd McCarthy driven and third placed runner Rockyroad Hanover clocked his final quarter in 24.4 seconds also. Simply blistering.

BULLDOG HANOVER REPLAY

A runner who was super impressive on the night was down under Pacer Underthesouthernsun N (Somebeachsomewhere). This Jennifer and Joe Bongiorno trained and driven runner pulled off a massive mile to set a new lifetime mark. It was a full field of 12 quality pacers lining up with Jacks Legend N being the only other down under pacer in the field. Underthesouthernsun N was let slide off his starting gate of five and made his way to the top end. The son of Somebeachsomewhere passed the half in a solid 54.3 and was then let rip from that point on. He ran down the back stretch and around the turn in a 26.2 second third quarter which broke rivals hearts. In the stretch it was a very competitive battle but he took out first place by a neck and clocked a lightning time of 1:47.4.

Other highlights of the night was with Bella Bellini (Bar Hopping), the star trotting filly trained and driven by down under duo, Nifty Norman and Dexter Dunn. She trotted a winning mile in 1:51.0 in third leg of the graduate series for $40,000. Driven patently, she roared her final quarter in an impressive 25.4 seconds trotting.
