With just on four months of the year to go in North America one stallion stands out and is making a huge impact on the harness racing two-year-old sires list and that is the Somebeachsomewhere stallion and first season sire Downbytheseaside.Ā
With the major Sire Stakes Season for the State of Ohio finalised last weekend at the half-mile Northfield Park oval, Downbytheseaside has become firmly number one on the money winning sires list and it is his to lose as the Grand Circuit begins in North America.Ā
The two-year-old $300,000 Sire Stakes Championships were a clean sweep for Downbytheseaside as both his fillies and colts dominated their opposition.
In the first $300,000 Final for the boys Downbytheseaside had 6 of the 8 starters drawing posts 1 through to 6 and they finished the first four home with the unbeaten colt Gulf Shores (out of Western Drag by Dragon Again) improving his record to 5 starts for 5 wins with a record of 1:51.3 (at Scioto Downs) and stakes of $251,500. Here is the video of that race.
In the second $300,000 Final for the girls this time Downbytheseaside had 5 of the 8 starters and this race saw the sensational Sea Silk (Silk Purse by Bettorās Delight) extend her winning streak to 7 for 7 with $340,000 in the bank.Ā
But that was not the story of the race as Sea Silk started from the outside post 8, which is usually the kiss of death, on the half-mile Northfield Park Oval and still jogged in a stunning world record mile of 1:51.1 becoming the fastest two-year-old in history on a half-mile track. Here is a picture of Sea Silk winning that race and the video of the race as well.
For the record Downbytheseaside himself (18th September 2016) is the fastest two-year-old colt ever on a half-mile track with a world record 1:50 flat and can now claim to have sired the fastest two-year-old filly ever on a half-mile track, Sea Silk in a world record mile of 1:51.2.Ā
And it does not end there for Downbytheseaside in this writers opinion, as he has a two-year-old colt called Pebble Beach (Santa Rosa by Western Ideal) that I believe to possibly be the best two-year-old of the year in all of North America. Pebble Beach has already paced a winning mile at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky in 1:50.1. He has started in four $40,000 legs of the Kentucky Sire Stakes for three wins and a spectacular second in a world record mile of 1:48.3 beaten a neck only after making all the pace. This race has to be seen to be believed. Pebble Beach was amazing. I believe that he will prove to be the best two-year-old of the year! Here is a video of that world record.
Ā
Taking nothing away from the winner Caviart Camden (Huntsville) on that occasion but Pebble Beach came back on Tuesday of this week to clearly redeem himself and coming from well back and behind Caviart Camden to easily beat him in another $40,000 leg of the Kentucky Sire Stakes. Pebble Beach is the leading points scorer for the Kentucky Sires Stakes Final on the 19th September. Watch Pebble Beach win this race.
You might ask how a son of Downbytheseaside that stands in Ohio is eligible for the lucrative Kentucky Sire Stakes. Well to make a horse eligible for the Kentucky Sire Stakes the mare in foal has to be a resident of the State of Kentucky for 180 days for the resultant foal to be eligible. Therefore the smart commercial breeders move there mares between two States annually, six months in each. This gives the breeder two options with the progeny of there mare. Also it adds value for the progeny of the mare when selling at the Yearling Sales. The Kentucky Sires Stakes go for five $40,000 legs with a $250,000 Final to be held on the 19th of September. Big money in todayās market and a valuable addition for money won to any stallions progeny.Ā
For the record it just gets better for Downbytheseaside as his progeny hold several records for the current year as at todayās date the 9th of September;Ā
Richest 2yo filly in North America – Sea Silk $350,000Ā
Richest 2yo pacing colt in North America – Gulf Shores $251,500Ā
Fastest 2yo filly on a half-mile track in North America – Sea Silk 1:51.2Ā
Fastest 2yo filly on a half-mile track in the World – Sea Silk 1:51.2
