Young junior driver Carter Dalgety made a dream start to his harness racing career when he managed to deadheat for first on his first raceday drive at Oamaru today.
With the whole family watching from the sidelines, Carter was as cool as a cucumber during the race, easing back early before flying home down the outer on the John Hay trained Adieu Flirt. While it seemed on TV like he had done enough to get the win by himself, the result was closer than it looked with the judge finally declaring a deadheat between Adieu Flirt (Courage Under Fire) and Five Star General (Art Major) with driver Devon van Til.
Even Carter was unsure of the result after the line.
“I didn’t really have a clue who won to be honest.”
“I knew Devon was right there, but a deadheat I’ll take that,” he said after the race.
Adieu Flirt has now won her last two races from the John Hay barn and looks well placed for more success if she keeps racing in the form she is in at the moment.
Later on the program I’m Tough and driver Blair Orange narrowly won the Kurow cup from the TAB favourite Di Caprio.
Orange took I’m Tough (Bettor’s Delight) straight to the lead and reeled off a final 800m in 55.6 to hold off Di Caprio by 1/2 head at the line.
