Locally trained Duke Of Cornwall proved he’ll be a worthy harness racing contender for the end of season Southern Supremacy Stakes when he won the $12,000 Nuggets Final at the Central Southland Raceway today.
Trained on the course by Lauren Pearson and driven by Matty Williamson, the two-year-old Sweet Lou gelding made up for an unlucky run for second at his last start to win easily.

In today’s pacing feature favourite Peroni and Wonthavtime both pushed out early, but Williamson asn’t part of the early fireworks.
“I let them sort it out and snuck round in the middle part,” he said.
After the early positions were sorted Williamson made his move and with just over 1600 metres to run, he took Duke Of Cornwall to the front and there he stayed.

“He’s a lovely staying horse but he’s quite lazy and floats along. It doesn’t feel as though you’re doing much but it’s always there at the business end. As lazy as he is I think if you asked him to, he’d just go another lap. He’s a nice sized horse, a good pacer and I think running 2-56 shows he’ll go a fair way. He’s made of the right stuff.”
The winning margin was three quarters of a length with Peroni running second and Justalittlesip running home for third.
