Young harness racing driver Korbyn Newman drove the race of his life tonight (May 12), driving the Robert and Jenna Dunn trained Mighty Looee (Sweet Lou) to an impressive win in the listed $96,000 Country Championship Final at Addington Raceway.
In an exciting and quickly run race where the lead changed several times, Newman found himself back near last with a lap to go.
“I thought I did myself a mischief. I missed away and I went up the fence and he was a little bit keen in the running, and I thought we had done our deed,” an emotional Newman told trackside viewers after the race.
Amazingly with the pace on all the way it played right into the back runners hands and Mighty Looee and Newman got a good cart into the race over the last 800m, before looming on the turn and going on to win by just over a length at the line.
“I was going good and there was a bit of work to do but he still felt like he had a bit in the tank, so we peeled and then I though we were right in this,” Newman said.
“It is the biggest win to date for me and I can’t thank RJ (Robert Dunn) and Johnny and Jenna and the owner Robyn, they have been so good to me,” he said.
MIGHTY LOOEE REPLAY
The winner ran the 3200m race in a slick 3:58.9 with a closing 800m in 57.3 seconds.
Wheels Of Fortune and driver John Hay ran second and Get Up N Dance (Nathan Williamson) ran third.
