Harness Racing’s Box Seat presenter Greg O’Conner told the Addington crowd the Nevele R Three Year Old Fillies Series Final should be renamed the Jean Feiss Three Year Old Fillies Series after today’s winner True Fantasy (Bettor’s Delight) became Feiss’s fourth.
Feiss, who came over to New Zealand from Australia to be on-course for a stack of horses she owns, was suitably impressed at how trainers Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen have resurrected the classy filly’s form line.
“They’ve had to go through a lot. She fibrillated which was a bit of a shock. It took a bit to come back. I think she got a little bit fat, and the stable also had a bug that went through all the horses so it’s all credit to them,” she said.
She paid particular credit to the filly’s regular pilot Natalie Rasmussen who guided True Fantasy to her three and a half length win.
“I’d like to thank Nat who’s always had faith in this horse. Even when she wasn’t 100 percent she was there for her and her faith has been rewarded today,” Feiss told the Addington crowd at the presentation.
The race was controlled by Rasmussen who had the filly in front early.
“I’ve been really pleased with her work. She worked amazing on Sunday. She felt like her old self and the moment she went on the track she felt great. If you’ve got a good draw on a day like today you have to make use of it. She felt super in front,” Rasmussen said.
TRUE FANTASY REPLAY
Feiss’s previous winners are Spanish Armada (2017), Elle Mac (2018) and Amazing Dream (2020).
And in total, Purdon in a variety of training partnerships, has won seven of the last ten Nevele R’s.
Feiss is a regular buyer of New Zealand yearlings, particularly fillies.
“I do a far bit of homework on them. You have to go around and see them. And you start off with a big list then you end up with a few.”
Over the years Feiss has bought and raced a host of good fillies but she never breeds from her good mares.
“I’d rather go and buy the yearlings.”
