Kaiwera harness racing trainer Carl Hanna is developing a knack of turning aged stock by Somebeachsomewhere around.
“That’s why I initially asked Kirk (former trainer Kirk Larsen) about him. I’ve had a bit of success with them. I don’t know why. They’re quirky horses,” Hanna said.
He proved to be successful again, at Winton today when Oneloveonelife won his first race at start thirty four.
Hanna mixes dairy farming with training and is best known for resurrecting Tairlaw Toll’s (Somebeachsomewhere) career, winning five races with him from twenty starts.
Today junior driver Kerryn Tomlinson settled Oneloveonelife back on the outside of the large field before moving forward and finding the one one behind stablemate Chemmy (Auckland Reactor). At the 500 Tomlinson released the handbrake and Oneloveonelife sprinted quickly to get to the lead just before turning in. The horse let down nicely to win by three lengths.
ONELOVEONELIFE REPLAY
“It’s the first time he’s had a soft run and he finished the race off strongly. He’s always been three wide or parked.”
Today was the horse’s nineth start for Hanna and prior to the win he’d recorded two seconds and two thirds for his new trainer.
“I asked Kirk about him a while ago and he suggested the horse might need a change of scenery.”
As Hanna doesn’t have a track, he jogs his horses in the cart around the driest paddock he has available at the time.
“At this time of year because it’s so wet, they’re working hard so they get fit. This horse is in the cart every day and he thrives on it. He doesn’t do a lot of fast work, just slow stuff. I find it gives them a lot of confidence. I just try and keep their mind fresh.”
Hanna said Oneloveonelife is in a good place at the moment and enjoying life on the farm.
“He’s got a big ego and thinks he’s kingpin. If he’s like that he normally races not bad.”
The Own the Moment syndicate which raced the horse out of Larsen’s barn remain in the ownership group with Hanna’s wife and parents, as well as Jason Enright and one of his friends.
