Harness racing stallion Vincent sired his first New Zealand winner tonight when the Tony Herlihy trained Seve won the first two-year-old race of the season at Alexandra Park.
Seve (Vincent– River Belle) was beaten for early speed in the mobile 1700m event and had to settle for the trail in the race after Frankie Major and driver David Butcher found the lead very quickly from gate three. Although running greenly in the running Seve had enough pace in the straight to run up the passing lane and grab a nose victory for driver/trainer Tony Herlihy.
The race was run in a 2-02.5 mile rate with a quick closing quarter of 27.9 seconds.
Later in the night Self Assured looked back to his brilliant best with a dominating performance to win R73 and faster Pace in the hands of driver Mark Purdon.
Self Assured had to sit parked for the majority of the race but reeled off a closing 800m in 54.5 seconds to win comfortably from a late closing B D Joe.
