“It was a surprise she ran down the outer like that. She had no right to do that,” was the comment from Yaldhurst harness racing trainer Regan Todd after Treacherous Gall (Captaintreacherous) came storming down the outside to win the fourth heat of the Nevele R Sires Stakes at Oamaru today (Sep. 17).
Just when favourite Aardiebytheseaside (Downbytheseaside) looked to be the winner and commentator Justin Evans was waxing lyrical about her winning, Treacherous Gall with driver Craig Ferguson came storming home getting up to win by half a length.
“She’s come back stronger and if anything, today we thought she would improve with the run.”
Earlier in the week Todd had talked about a possible trip to Australia.
“She could run in the Victoria Oaks and she’s paid up for the Breeders Crown so that could be a good option as well. If she goes she’ll be away for a couple of months. We could either tag along with Nathan Purdon or I’m good mates with Josh Dickie and Sammy Kilgour. I’d like to go somewhere where there’s a swimming pool and try and stick to the same training regime.”
Todd said owners Southlanders Dave Kennedy and Cleland Murdoch, will make that decision.
“I’ll leave that up to the boys. I’m happy either way. Millwood Nike (Captaintreacherous) looks pretty exceptional. We’ve got a bit of thinking to do as to whether we bang heads with her every week or go over to Aussie. In saying that there’s some real nice ones over there as well.”
TREACHEROUS GALL REPLAY
After winning at Addington in October last year as a two year old, Treacherous Gall’s formed dropped off.
“I copped the blame for that. She was coming to the end of it and I was probably over training her. She’s come back as a three year old a lot bigger and stronger and keeps getting better. Dave took her home for a month after the Southern Oaks and she came back in good nick. She’s had a long slow build up. We aimed for this race and it was good to pull the win off.”
