Harness racing star Self Assured managed to get revenge on his arch rival South Coast Ardern tonight at Alexandra Park.
The son of Bettor’s Delight came barrelling home from last on the turn with a sharp sprint to win the (Gr3) Lincoln Farms The Founders Cup over 1700m.
Although he was last in the running, it seemed there was never a doubt for driver Mark Purdon once he straightened up.
“Yes only six runners and he was not that far off them,” Purdon said after the race.
“The main danger just had to do that extra work outside the leader which helped.”
“But Self Assured just has that blistering turn of foot and was too quick,” Purdon said.
Self Assured ran the 1700m mobile in a 1-54.5 mile rate with a closing 800m in a slick 55.6 seconds.
Tonight’s Young Gun Heats were run in wet conditions with Seve (Vincent) getting a deserved win in the Colts and Gelding Heat for trainer/driver Tony Herlihy. Seve led all the way for Herlihy and ran the 1700m in a 1-57.9 mile rate.
Kahlua Flybye (Bettor’s Delight) impressively won the fillies Heat in the hands of driver Peter Ferguson. Kahlua Flybye trailed in the race and was too strong in the run to the judge, going on to win by a one and a half lengths in a 2-00.4 mile rate.
