Harness racing trainer Tate Hopkins will be counting his lucky stars tonight after being knocked off a jetski in a raging flood as he and fellow rescuer Antony Martinovich tried to extricate a horse that had been caught up in the floodwaters.
Hopkins who trains in partnership with well known horseman Frank Cooney got into trouble when the horse being rescued tried to get on the back of the jetski knocking him off into the swiftly flowing water.
“The water was quite strong and it carried me quite a long way in a short time,” he told One News.
Once Hopkins had been picked out of the water downstream by Martinovich, the horse who was stuck in fencing wire was then freed and led to safety.
“The horse is actually relatively good now. He’s got a couple of little battle scars but nothing too serious,” Hopkins said.
