With a gutsy performance, Henry Hubert has won today’s Hannon Memorial at Oamaru.

Victory looked anything but likely for Henry Hubert after a tardy beginning.

The six-year-old son of Bettor’s Delight, trained by Robert and Jenna Dunn, had been backed into third favourite following a fourth in the New Brighton Cup and a second in the Maurice Holmes Vase.

Henry Hubert was slowly away and settled at the tail of the field, with stablemate and favourite Classie Brigade leading early, with second favourite Pembrook Playboy on his back in the trial.

But with a lap to go Tim Williams looped the field and crossed stablemate Classie Brigade into the lead. In a gritty performance he then held on to make it win number 13 in 60 starts. He paid $3.60 for the win.

Robyns Playboy, paying $7.70 a place, careered home out wide for second for Craig Ferguson, with Classie Brigade hanging on for third, ahead of an unlucky Pembrook Playboy who was three back the fence and had no racing room in the final 200 metres.

The time for the 2600 metres was 3:20.33.

It was Williams’ second win the Group 3 after also winning with Dream About Me in 2018.
