Ever since harness racing started in the Southern Hemisphere, breeders from down under have been importing mares from North America with great success.
Just last season in Australia we had two top three year olds in Follow The Stars 1:53.8 ($707,237) and Ideal For Real 1:55.8 ($182,485) staring at the the top level and both are from imported dams.
This years freakish New Zealand based filly Golden Goddess is a grand-daughter of the imported No Nukes mare Sabilize 1:55.7 ($355,056)
That is just scratching the surface of the impact imported mares have had down under in the last few years.
National Bloodstock brought in a lot of North American mares into New Zealand in the late 1980s and early 1990s and they had a lot of success when covering these mares by stallions they were standing at the time.
The son of Soky's Atom in Desperate Comment was one of the real success stories of the National Bloodstock model in the early 1990s.
From the Temujin mare Tabella Bindy, Desperate Comment won 28 races in New Zealand and Australia including two Victoria Cups, Easter Cup and a third in an Inter-Dominion Final on his way to winning $1,033,065.
A half sister to Desperate Comment, Diamonds N Gold 1:56.5 (5 wins) was a smart racemare of her era and has left eight winners at stud including the very smart Diamonds N Furs 1:54.5 ( $231,399).
Another winner from Diamonds N Gold was the talented Christian Cullen mare in Maid In Splendour 1:56.1 ($61,825) who won a Nevele R Fillies heat and finished second in the Ladyship Stakes.
Maid In Splendour's first foal was the Bettor's Delight colt, Never Say Never who was purchased out of last years Australasian Classic Yearling Sale for $60,000 by clients of the Ken Barron barn.
Her second foal is the Mach Three colt, The Thug and he will be sold as Lot 45 in this years Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka in Auckland on February 22nd.
The colt has been well named as he has that dominant appearance and on looks alone will be well sought after on sale day.
