Leeston harness racing trainer Katie Cox says two year old It’s Tough (Bettor’s Delight) is ready for Sunday’s (Jun. 4) time honoured $45,000 Group Two Rakaia Seed Cleaning Sapling Stakes.
The gelding was an impressive winner of the Welcome Stakes at Addington three weeks ago when he finished his race powerfully, beating A Little Silence (Downbytheseaside) and Bronson (Vincent) in a tight finish.
“The three weeks in between won’t have hurt him. He’s had a few pretty decent hit outs which have probably been as good as a trial. We’re happy with where he’s at. He seems to have come on a bit since that last run too,” Cox said.
She says It’s Tough has held his weight well and remains relaxed. The field is similar to the Welcome Stakes with two fresh faces in Shards Matrix (Sweet Lou) and Art Jordon (Art Major) to add to the puzzle.
“Matt Purvis’s one (A Little Silence) went super sitting parked and you’ve still got to respect Bronson. It looks to be an even bunch really. I’m sure my fella will put in another good effort. It’s a matter of seeing what happens early. I think with two year olds you can have a few plans, but nothing too set until the mobile leaves.”
This will be the second time Cox has had a runner in the Sapling. Tide And Time (Somebeachsomewhere) ran second in 2021 beaten by three quarters of a length by My Ultimate Chevron (Sweet Lou).
From 1999 until 2021 the race was run over a mile but last year the club changed the distance to 1700 metres. Vinke B (Vincent) took out the win in the hands of Blair Orange.
Sunday’s juvenile feature is set to run at 3.41pm and will be televised on Trackside One.
