It’s great when a plan pays off. And that’s what happened today at the Invercargill Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Ascot Park when Jordy (Bettor’s Delight) won whilst in the care of Tyler Dewe.
The five year old gelding was struggling in the highly competitive Canterbury region and Dewe hatched a plan with Jordy’s Prebbleton trainer John McDermott.
“I’ve known John for few years now and I bought Sophie (Bettor’s Delight) off him a while ago. I actually rang him because I was getting low in numbers, and I asked if he wanted to send one down on horse movement to target the RATO Final at the end of June. He sent Jordy down,” Dewe said.
Jordy has been in the south for just over two weeks and was made favourite today after an unlucky run at Winton last Saturday.
“He actually went really well last week but locked wheels at a crucial time and flew home for fifth, so he looked the horse to beat.”
Today after drawing well, driver Sarah O’Reilly had designs on the lead but soon handed up to Gronkowski, (Captaintreacherous) settling in the trail. Once the field straightened up for the run home Jordy proved too good, winning by half a length.
“He reminds me of a horse we had called Rakajed (A Rocknroll Dance). He switches on and then off and races a bit like that too but to the eye today it looked like he (Jordy) found the line really good.”
JORDY REPLAY
Dewe wasn’t too disappointed with his stable runner Gronkowski who recorded his fourth straight second.
“It would be bloody nice to win a race, but seconds are okay.”
Today was Jordy’s third win.
He’s out of Flyover (Live Or Die) and is a full brother to the well performed Better Fly, the winner of five. It’s a family the McDermotts have had for a long time.
