Cambridge trained pacer Kango (American Ideal) loves a good dog fight and the six year old harness racing gelding got what he liked in the Listed Roy Purdon Memorial at Alexandra Park tonight (May 19).
KANGO REPLAY
Despite a slight bobble at the start driver David Butcher soon had the free going pacer in a rhythm, and he took the lead with a lap and a half to run.
Favourite Self Assured (Bettor’s Delight) moved to sit parked with just over a lap to run but when it came down to the business end of the 2200 metres Self Assured couldn’t get past Kango who held on with tenacity to win by half a neck.
The winning time was 2-44.2 with a 55.9 second last 800 metres.
“I think he’s jumped to another level. I was pretty happy with him after his trial at Pukekohe the other day. He’s at his best racing in front. He did skip away but he got into his stride pretty quickly, so we got round to the front and that made all the difference,” driver David Butcher said after the win.
Trained by Arna Donnelly it was Kango’s fiftieth start and thirteenth win.
