The Cran & Crissie Dalgety trained Krug has taken out the Dunstan Feeds Junior Free For All on the same track where he won the NZ Derby exactly seven months ago.
After a couple of indifferent runs at his last two races, where he dipped his toe in the water against the best pacers in New Zealand, punters were keen to unload again on the son of Bettor’s Delight, and he easily justified his favouritism, winning by a handsome margin in the hands of New Zealand’s top driver Blair Orange.
Orange was full of praise for Krug after the race.
“He actually knocked of a little in front today, which he normally runs on the bridle, but when I asked him to click up at the 600m he did and he has run to the line nice and strong.”
“The way the race read, I had to go forward early and take control of it. I knew the horse had the ability to do that so he has run really well,” he said.
Second home was Need You Now and driver John Dunn and Shan Noble ran home well for third.
