Cran and Chrissie Dalgety may have unearthed another talented two year old filly judging on the way Lizzie Borden (Downbytheseaside) cleaned up a handy field of two year olds at Gore today.

LIZZIE BORDEN REPLAY

The two year old filly is a homebred from Woodlands Stud and is out of Lancewood Lizzie who won thirteen races. Her best win was the 2017 Four Year Old Diamond at Ashburton.

“We got her early days just after her break in prep. She’s always been nice. She’s a big strong filly so she’s been in and out of work a few times. We gave her a couple of trials, she had a race and was a really good second to a nice boy (Zeus Lightning). We thought the trip down here would be really good for her,” winning driver Carter Dalgety said.

Dalgety positioned his filly in the trail with Seaside Brucie taking up the running. Dalgety presented Lizzie Borden at the top of the straight and she sprinted home well, to win from a late finishing Indulge Me with Seaside Brucie who stepped out of one of his hopples finishing third.

The winning time of 2-01.3 was a new track record.

“Going 1-54 (mile rate) is outstanding especially around Gore. We’re rapt. But I think she can go on to better things. There was quite a bit of talent so for her to put them away like that is pretty pleasing.”

All three placegetters were by Downbytheseaside which happens to stand at Woodlands Stud.

“We’ve always liked her – big and strong and she has a bit of attitude to her. But the best thing about her is the way she’s made. She’s a big powerful filly and a good doer. That helps a young horse.”

As the spring and summer racing starts to amp up, some big targets are being considered for Lizzie Borden.

“We might take her up north for the Caduceus Group One two year old fillies’ race. We have a few options but she’ll come home and have a few days off and get ready for another race. She could be a touch better the Auckland way round. She wears a pole in the inside going this way round. Going the other way round she doesn’t need it.”
