Northern Southland harness racing stud Macca Lodge has three yearlings on their books for the NZB Standardbred Sales in Christchurch next month.
Brent and Sheree McIntyre along with their son Caine have been operating the 600 acre stud since 2008, when they purchased the well known Jaccka Lodge from Charlie and Alisa Smaill.
Brent’s racing interest goes back to his grandfather Davey who owned a few nice horses including Embark, which won the Wairio Cup, driven by his father’s uncle Jock McDonald.
Brent’s father Graeme also trained horses and drove in the first ever Roxburgh Cup at Gore when he was eighteen.
Brent’s son-in-law Paul Hailes has watched all the Macca Lodge yearlings develop and knows their pedigree inside out. Phil Cummings from Tuapeka Lodge is prepping the Always B Miki filly out of Wave Runner on behalf of Macca Lodge.
Lot 168 – Bay colt – Downbytheseaside – Glenburn Joy (American Ideal)
Boots Electric (Somebeachsomewhere) is the headline horse in this colt’s pedigree. His 12 Australian wins included the G1 Victoria Four Year Old Bonanza and the South Australian Cup. Smokin Annie (10 wins) and The Honey Badger (3 wins) also appear on the colt’s sales page as does 16 race winner Chesterton (Christian Cullen).
“He’s a nice colt that’s stamped by Downbytheseaside. He’s the strongest foal the mare has had so far. The mare’s second foal, a filly by Betting Line broke in really well. They’ve got in the catalogue that he’s a first of January colt but that’s not right. He’s an eleventh of November foal. He’s got very similar bloodlines to Boots Electric,” Hailes said.
Lot 334 – Bay colt – Always B Miki – Wave Runner (Live Or Die)
There’s plenty to like about this colt’s pedigree. His dam Wave Runner, (Live Or Die) has left a number of high end pacers including Bonnie Joan who had 10 wins including the G2 Premier Mares Championship and G2 Southland Oaks. Other winners have been Kilowatt Kid (19 wins) Sand Wave (10 wins) and Break Dance (1-53.3).
“She’s a good size and one of the bigger Wave Runner fillies. She’s been beautiful to handle and has a real good nature to her. She’s nice and straight and well filled out. She’s an upstanding filly who moves really well and gets round the paddock beautifully,” Cummings said.
Lot 365 – Bay colt – Downbytheseaside – Bella Cara (Well Said)
There’s plenty of black print on this colt’s pedigree and with trendsetting Downbytheseaside added to the mix, this yearling has plenty of appeal.
His second dam Imprint (Life Sign) has left nine foals of racing age and nine have won races. Dibaba (Shadow Play) won seven in NZ, including the G2 Premier Mares Championship and G2 Southland Oaks Final. In America she won a further nine. Other winners produced by Imprint have been Opulent (Christian Cullen) 18 wins, Cardinal Sin (Bettor’s Delight) 4 wins and Idealindiamonds (American Ideal) 13 wins. This is the family of Ohoka Connor (Sunshine Beach) and Braeview Kelly (Bettor’s Delight).
“He’s an outstanding colt and we’re rapt with him. He’s a big strong bay. He’s definitely thrown to Downbytheseaside. His first foal by Fear The Dragon broke in well and Macca quite likes him but he’s going to take a bit of time. He’s got a strong pedigree behind him, and he’s very closely related to Ohoka Connor,” Hailes said.
