Mark Purdon has won the first running of the (Listed) $67,000 Roy Purdon Memorial Race with champion harness racing pacer Self Assured at Alexandra Park tonight.
Self Assured was very quickly away from the 30m handicap in the race, while several of his rivals made early errors.
“He made such a great beginning getting down to the markers three back. The beginning probably won the race for him,” an emotional Mark Purdon said after the race.
Self Assured had to fight hard for the win after coming out three wide on the home turn. Purdon had to get everything out of the son of Bettor’s Delight close to the line and Self Assured put his head out to take a narrow decision over the early leader Kango and David Butcher.
“It is a real thrill to win the first running,” Purdon said.
SELF ASSURED / MARK PURDON REPLAY
Considering the terrible conditions of the rain soaked track, the race was run in a quick 1-59.9 mile rate for the standing start 2200m event.
The last 800m was run in 57.5 seconds and the winner was trained by the powerful Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen stable.
