Impressive 2yo pacer Merlin remained unbeaten tonight, after winning the (G2) Breckon Farms Young Guns Cardigan Bay Stakes for harness racing trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan.
A confident Zachary Butcher did the driving on the smart son of Art Major.
“I think he will have just too much speed for them,” Butcher said before the race.
Merlin did have too much speed for his rivals, crossing them at the start and leading all the way to beat a game Beckham and Mark Purdon who sat without cover in the race. Third home was the trail horse Seve and Tony Herlihy.
There was an upset in the 2yo Fillies Young Guns earlier in the night with Forever Me upsetting the favourite and stablemate Kahlua Flybye.
In the (G2) event, Forever Me with driver John Dunn sped to the lead with a lap to run and rallied well to win easily in the home straight.
Forever Me (Sweet Lou) ran the mobile 1700m distance in a new race record time of 2-01.6, a mile rate of 1-55.1.
