Master trotting trainer Paul Nairn has three trotters ready to kick some harness racing goals at Addington on Friday night.
Two year old Head Em Up (Waterloo Sunset) qualified just last week at Rangiora and is starting in Race Two. His second dam is sixteen race win mare So Long Eden (Penrod Eden) so there’s plenty of breeding there.
“I’m quite happy with him at this stage. He’s a nice gaited young trotter that I’m hopeful will make a two year old. He’s been a little bit on the hot side and like a lot of young trotters he’s a work in progress. He’s got to get a bit of ringcraft so he might as well start out at Addington. With what I’ve done with him he’s a chance of being a good two year old,” Nairn said.
In Race Eight Outamyway (Love You) and Masterly (Love You) will line up.
Outamyway (Love You) had solid form prior to his last start a week ago when he trotted roughly before breaking on the last bend.
“I wouldn’t worry too much about that. He was just getting away from the pricker on the pole more than he should have. It was there to keep him straight. That was the reason he wasn’t trotting that well. His work this week has been fine and his two runs before his last run were reasonably good so I can’t see any reason why he won’t go well this week.”
Outamyway’s last win was fin a pacing race at Westport in December 2021 and his last trotting win was the Listed NZB Standardbred Harness Million at Addington in May 2021 as a three year old. He’s been relatively lightly raced since then.
Masterly resumed last week at Addington, running home nicely from midfield for fifth.
“I was very pleased with that run and he got to the line pretty good with a quick last half. It was his first run for quite a while and he was trotting well which he hasn’t always done.”
He should be suited by the 2600 metre stand and draws two.
Nairn said all three of his trotters are a chance, adding that he doesn’t take horses to the races if they’re not ready to go well.
