No Added Sugar (Sweet Lou) has rewarded her new owners. It’s been a bit of a wait and there have been some vet bills but the gelding got the perfect trip and won at the Invercargill Harness Racing Club meeting at Ascot Park today.
From barrier one driver Matty Williamson took No Added Sugar to the front but after being challenged by his brother Nathan driving Whata Razzle Dazzle, Matty decided to hand up and take the trail. Once he hit the passing lane No Added Sugar ground down Whata Razzle Dazzle and held out Robyns Art to win by three quarters of a length. The winning time on an easy track was 2-40.2.
NO ADDED SUGAR REPLAY
The six year old gelding initially trained by Steve and Amanda Telfer, was listed on Gavelhouse auction website and subsequently purchased by Scott Leader and Invercargill Harness Racing Club President Craig Heyrick.
Placed with Tyler Dewe about four months ago, the gelding has required some treatment.
“He was quite sore in a couple of places and Megan Reidie from Vet South did a sacroiliac joint injection and we put him out for eight weeks,” Dewe said.
Going into today’s race the barn wasn’t overly confident after No Added Sugar ran poorly at the trials.
“He almost dropped out at the trials on Saturday. His work was flash on Monday, so I rang Craig and asked him what he wanted to do. We saw the nominations and thought he was going to get an easy race against the low rated horses, so we started him. He can work nice at home and we put the blind on today hoping they’d spark him up and they did.”
The win was the perfect result for Leader too, as his building company sponsored the race.
