He’s not the prettiest trotter going round but that counted for nothing today when One Over All (Angus Hall) trained by Gavin Smith led and took out the Group Three Pryde’s Easifeed Southern Lights at the Northern Southland harness racing meeting today.
ONE OVER ALL REPLAY
“His action is a bit all over the shop at times. He actually felt like he trotted nicer today than he did at Omakau. He felt pretty smooth and solid today once we got through that first four hundred,” driver Matty Williamson said.
The seven year old gelding made light work of the 20 metre handicap and with two laps to run Williamson took him to the front.
“He made a flier and got in front of about half the field after the start. Once he did that it looked like he’d be very hard to beat. He was handicapped well and it was a good race for him on paper, especially after he got away like he did.”
The winning time of 3-23.9 just lowered the race and track record of 3-24.0 held by 2020 winner Pres The Belle.
“He found big time and I think if I’d asked him to he would have given a bit more. He’s a good horse and just below those superstar ones.”
It’s the second time part-owner Lex Williams has won the Southern Light, taking out the 2021 edition with One Apollo trained by Brent White.
After beginning his career with Smith and winning five races, One Over All transferred to Australian trainer Jess Tubb’s stable where he’s won the majority of his races.
