Southern Bred Southern Reared horses were to the fore at Addington last night with Jumal (Downbytheseaside) continuing on his winning way and Tact Teva (Lather Up) making a winning return to the racetrack after last racing in October 2024.

“He got kicked by a paddock mate and fractured the bone above his knee. It was just rest, box, rest, which he doesn’t handle well because he’s fidgety. He’s come through it, had his full rehab and had a good prep,” said Amanda Telfer who trains the gelding with her brother Steve.

Prior to last night’s return, Tact Teva hadn’t been to any trials or workouts, so it was a super training effort by the Stonewall Stud team.

“It was the most nervous I’ve been for a while, because I really like him. No it was great.”

Driver Tim Williams took the three year old forward from a handy draw and he went down to the line to win by a length and a half from Berrettini.

Tact Teva will now head to the $50,000 Harness 7000 in a fortnight.

“He’s still got a winter coat on him and hopefully we can get that out of him.”

Offered by Winton couple Trevor Proctor and Diane Dynes, Tact Tava was passed in at the NZB Standardbred 2023 Yearling Sales in Christchurch.

“I was actually in Aussie and Steve Stockman (of Stonewall Stud) rang and asked if I liked all the yearlings he’d bought. I told him I didn’t, because I’d given him one number (Tact Teva’s lot number) and he didn’t buy it,” Amanda told me after Tact Teva won his first race at Winton in August last year.

After the Sale Tact Teva was passed onto Mark Jones before Stockman came along and bought the colt for $60,000.

Tact Teva is out of the ten race winning mare Tact Hayley Jane which at stud has left Tact Tama, the winner of all five of his starts in Australia, Tact Hayley’s Delight, the winner of sixteen and open class pacer Tact McLeod.

Last night later on the card, Jumal continued on his winning way when he took out the Tabak Business Sale & Vivace Mobile Pace.

Driver Sam Ottley took the two year old off the gate and when second favourite Zeus Lightning put in a few rough strides he took Jumal to the top.

After some soft early sectionals Jumal cut out his last 800 metres in 55 seconds, beating Stumblin In by two lengths with Zeus Lightning a head back in third.

JUMAL REPLAY

“I thought there were a couple of handy horses in there. I focused on my horse. He’s done everything right and he’s delivered. It was a little bit of a relief, but it’s onwards and upwards,” trainer Steven Reid said.

Jumal will have his next start in the Woodland Stud Sires’ Stakes heat on the 19th September. Following that, his two main targets will be the $200,000 Harness Million on10th October and the Woodlands Stud Sires’ Stakes Final on 11th November.

“He’s such a cool horse. Obviously I’ve had a number of decent younger horses in my time. He’s right up there and possibly a little bit ahead of them. You take a horse like Gold Ace who didn’t hit his straps until he was a three year old. This guy is probably a bit more advanced than that. I’m not saying he’s as good as Gold Ace because he still has to do it, but he’s got all the attributes that a real good horse has.”

Jumal is owned by Malcolm Wrigley and Reid’s partner Bella Storer. Storer bought the colt for $95,000 as an unnamed yearling at last year’s NZB Standardbred Yearling Sale in Christchurch and he’s named after Malcolm and his late wife Judith.

Jumal was bred by Dave and Dawn Kennedy of Beaudiene Breeding and is out of Beaudine Blinkz a full sister to multiple Group winning mare Beaudiene Bad Babe and millionaire pacer Beaudiene Boaz.
