When your mother is Shartin N, (Tintin in America) you have a bit to live up to, but the Christi Noble trained Princess Stella (Captaintreacherous) is heading in the right direction.
Princess Stella was bought by Richard Poillucci for $140,000 at the Lexington Select Sale and after stints with two other trainers, is now in the care of Noble.
“When I first got her I thought I had a lot to work with. She had a couple of little issues going on and I thought if I got her squared away she had some upside to her. I put her on my training programme. It took her a couple of weeks to come round because she was tying up a little bit. She seems to have turned the corner on that issue and she’s been spectacular,” Noble said.
She says Princess Stella is typical of the stock of Captaintreacherous.
“I think so. You have to let her think it’s her idea. If you ask her for too much or change, she doesn’t respond well and she’ll get pouty on you.”
Since being in Noble’s barn she’s won five of her six starts.
“I don’t think I’ve seen the bottom of her yet. She went some really wicked miles in the last couple of weeks. It was cold, raining one night and snowing. She doesn’t seem to be getting tired at all and seems to be getting better and better.”
Princess Stella’s best lifetime mark is 1-51.3 (H).
PRINCESS STELLA REPLAY
“When I get her on a big track she’ll definitely better that mark as long as she stays healthy and sound. We’re going to race her a couple more times and Rich (Richard Poillucci) and I will let her tell us if she needs a little time off. We’ll turn her out for a little bit and bring her back as a four year old. He (Poillucci ) is not really in the breeding business but she turns four in a couple of weeks and I think she has the ability to be an open mare here.”
Shartin N was a once in a lifetime pacing mare, winning 46 of her 68 starts and banking $2.7 million.
“I remember her mother racing. She was unbelievable.”
When she paced 1-46.4 on Hambletonian Day it was a World Record that still stands.
SHARTIN N WORLD RECORD REPLAY
In 2019 she was named U.S. Horse of the Year the first pacing mare of any age to be awarded this honour.
She dominated her sex across two seasons and in 2018 won 19 of 24 starts and earned over $1 million, a record for a pacing mare in a single season.
The following season she won 15 of her 19 starts, recorded her World Record time and was awarded U.S. Horse of the Year.
Her major wins included multiple editions of the Breeders Crown, Blue Chip Matchmaker Series, Lady Liberty, and Roses Are Red Stakes.
Earlier this year in recognition of her stunning career, Shartin N was inducted into the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame’s Living Horse Hall of Fame.
