North Canterbury harness racing trainer Gavin Smith has four runners, all of which have chances, entered at the Timaru meeting at the Phar Lap Raceway tomorrow (Mar 15).

Smith trains and will drive Antonov (Kadabra) in the first race. The four year old trotter has had two trials at Rangiora to fit him for his race day resumption.

Smith describes him as “quite a nice horse” and goes on to say that there have been a couple of wee issues and being quite big he’s needed time. “He’s come back stronger and seems good but is probably still on the way up. That said, it’s a small field and there’s no real standout so he’s got to be a good each way chance.”

Maiden pacer James Cagney (Art Major) has been knocking on the door for his first win and from a handy draw at three gets his chance tomorrow in Race Two.

“He used to be a horse that had a huge amount of ability, but he’s had so many issues. We’re managing him, he’s going to get one but it’ll be when he gets the right trip. He’s sound if you race him once a week and don’t do anything with him. And in training he just goes for a walk in the water. He’s not as screwed down as I would like him to be but this is the only way we can keep him sound.”

The Real McCoy (Bettor’s Delight) has won both of his trials in preparation for his three year old season debut. He draws gate six in Race Three.

“He’s quite a nice horse who is still on the up and I can see him going on with it. He’s quite green but the ability is there. He’s one of the one’s I like in the team. It wouldn’t surprise me if he went on and did good things later in the season.”

In Race Five the Des Baynes owned Quicksmart (American Ideal) runs from the 10 metre handicap and this looks like a winnable race for the six year old.

“Yeah, it is. He’s been racing well and it’s just been hard to get that right race for him. He’s pretty versatile, he can do a bit of work or come with one run. It’s between him and The Real McCoy as to which one is the best bet of the day.”
