The form line says it all – Beach Ball is a horse on the rise.
The Somebeachsomewhere harness racing colt trained by Kevin Chapman carried on with his fine vein of form as he led and beat a tidy field of two year olds at Winton yesterday.
“He made his own luck at the start. It was a great way to kick off another campaign,” said driver Tim Williams.

Beach Ball from gate seven, was taken straight to the top by Williams.
“He felt good in front. Kev put the blind back on today. We took them off at the trials as a bit of an experiment and it didn’t work.”
Beach Ball leaves with speed off the gate
After setting a strong pace, Beach Ball held on to beat favourite Hiranya which sat parked by a head with another three and a half lengths back to Sand Wave which was closing late after having to clear traffic at the top of the straight.
“Being is front is his natural forte at the moment. We thought we’d get in front early and adopt catch me if you can tactics….. He can run pretty good sectionals.”
At the finish
Owned by Kevin and wife Barbara, Beach Ball has now won three of his six starts.
“He’s a lovely colt and Kev and Barb are doing a great job looking after him. He’s their pride and joy and he races the way he looks. He’s got the engine there. The idea of bringing him down here was to help him grow up a bit. He’s got a big frame to fill in but the potential is all there.”
Beach Ball of out of the nine win Presidential Ball mare Twilight Rascal who Chapman also trained. As a broodmare she’s also left the promising Heroes Square, the winner of three of his four starts. The Art Major four year old is trained by Robert and Jenna Dunn.
Williams and Chapman go back a fair way with the reinsman having driven seven winners for the Amberley based trainer.
“Kevin was very good to me when I first kicked off as a junior. He gave me a lot of regular drives. He didn’t have quite the quality of horses he’s got now but he’s been a loyal supporter from day dot.”
Chapman has had success over the years, training good winners Locharburn, Belles Son and Four Starzzz Flash.
