Southern Breeders launch $300 breeder bonus

The Southern Standardbred Breeders Association (SSBA) has launched a new $15,000 breeding recognition initiative with effect from 1 February 2023.

SSBA members will be eligible to access a new $300 win bonus from 1 February, T&Cs apply.

“SSBA believes it is important the core breeding function of the harness racing industry continues to gain support and the bonus system is a tangible way of recognising breeders’ efforts and achievements,” SSBA President Mark O’Connor commented.

To be known as the Southern Breeders Bonus, the recognition scheme will be based on the following criteria:

• Will be payable to eligible members of SSBA who are the breeders of race winners in the Southern Harness region (eligible member defined as subscription paid by 30 Sept in a membership year or new members prior to being eligible to claim the bonus)
• The bonus payment amount will be $300 for a race winner that originated from a mare that was at least 50% owned by an eligible member of SSBA at the time of foal registration
• Only one bonus payment per season will be made to an eligible member of SSBA
• A pool of $15,000 per season has been allocated for the initiative which will accommodate the first 25 bonus payments in the period from 01 Jan to 30 June (inaugural year 01 Feb to 30 June) and the first 25 bonus payments in the 6 month period from 01 July to 31 December – Note this pool will be re-established at the start of each new season.
• Eligible members of SSBA who are entitled to a Breeders Bonus will need to apply for the $300 payment by generating an invoice (including GST where required) and emailing this to the SSBA Secretary, Gail Paisley at alan@outlook.co.nz
