Speed in the breed – Another rocket out of Castellina Lover?

Welcome into our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.

If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races you’re likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.

Workouts or trials take place across both islands over the next couple of days, here we look into some of the interesting bloodlines that present themselves.

Hillbilly (What The Hill – Dutch Annie) Set to run in a trial at Cambridge on Tuesday, this son of What The Hill certainly has the family history behind him to suggest he’ll be able to trot himself. Out of the McCaffrey stables, Hillbilly, a lovely mover, won a trial last week and looks to improve again here. Dam Dutch Annie won 4 from 13 starts and has excelled as a mother – her progeny includes the likes of Hot Pants (4 wins) Yagunnakissmeornot (17 wins) and The Player (6 wins)

Hillbilly catches the eye and has the trotting blood to be a star himself.

Jetasi (Bettor’s Delight – Janaka) Appearing in one of the earlier heats at Ashburton, this 2yr-old filly is trained by Mark & Nathan Purdon. Recent trial efforts from the juvenile have come in behind Renaldo and Stella Rouge. This family includes the now 7-time winner in Jagara (Bettor’s Delight) and Janaka’s Delight (Bettor’s Delight) the winner of two races from some 23 starts.

Jetasi runs a third to stablemates in early May.

Foliejon Star (Sky Major – Foliejon Star) This colt caught the eye because of a brother doing the winning thing on Sunday. Foliejon Star is a full to the Addington winner Waterholes Road so there’ll be a little more interest in how this one stretches out in the 4th heat of the day out of Ashburton.

Assisi Lover (Bettor’s Delight – Castellina Lover) There’s plenty of speed in this breed. The Dolan trained runner was last seen at workouts in January and comes into a workout learners field at the end of the Ashburton card. Dam Castellina Lover was known for her speed, winning 7 races including her first three race day appearances.

As a mother her record is one of quality with her progeny including Recco Lover (Bettor’s Delight) an 8-time winner, and Amore Vita (Art Major) winner of multiple Gr1 titles including the Vicbred 2yr-old and 3yo Fillies Finals and the 2023 Golden Girl Final when victorious over Manhattan and Delightful Angel.

This damline traces back to Vain Franco, mother to the star Under Cover Lover (In The Pocket)
