Welcome into our Speed In The Breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look into the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the features races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success- how the great families continue to leave the very best.
A look at the Rangiora and Ashburton trials and workouts on the 7th of May sees some exciting juveniles appear. These includeā¦
One For Jay (Sweet Lou – Bettorkeepthefaith) Going around in the first of the day at Ashburton, One For Jay, a 2yr-old out of the Brent and Tim White stable, could be one to follow in the future. Dam Bettorkeepthefaith was a winning performer who has kicked on once reaching the broodmare paddock, her progeny including the well-travelled Louie The Horse (Sweet Lou), a 1.50 miler in the USA. Another winner Getn Wiggy Withit, has now won 11, most coming while racing in Western Australia. The wider family is known through performers like the class Running On Faith, The Faithful (Bettorās Delight), and the currently competitive Jolimont (Sweet Lou)
Majic N The Port (Majestic Son – Ngaire Margaret) Thereās plenty of trotting power behind this Matthew Williamson trained runner. The 2yr-old filly is out of the 4-time winner in Ngaire Margaret, a consistent type although it’s as a mother that she has gone on to excel, being the mother of the 2023 Rowe Cup winner in Love N The Port (Love You) Itāll be of interest to see is thereās a little bit of Majic N The Hooves at Ashburton!
Bojack Horseman (Creatine – Toomuch To Do) A learner’s trot with some interesting bloodlines. This 4yr-old out of the Tracy Healy stable gets a great green tick in the breeding department. Dam Toomuch To Do won the Gr 2 Canterbury Park Trotting Cup of 2005 when beating out Prince Sundon and Adoās Invasion but itās as a broodmare whereās she made a magnificent contribution to the New Zealand trotting ranks, her progeny includes the Southern Star placed Hey Yo (Revenue) and the current performer Miss Yo (Peak), who won as recently as the 26th of April while the magnificent Bolt For Brilliance (Muscle Hill) is one of the recent greats of New Zealand trotting having taken the Rowe Cup title of 2022, and the 2yo and 4Yo Ruby titles of 2019 and 2021 among many other feature wins.
The Rowe Cup connections keep coming at Ashburton!
Connections of multiple Rowe Cups line up tomorrow – Bolt For Brillance is a close relation to Bojack Horseman
Lizzie Shelby (Art Major – Millie Sampson) Shifting our focus to the Rangiora trials tomorrow, this Brendon Hill trained runner is set to make an appearance in the 3rd of the day. This run coming after placing 3rd behind Sacetas on the 30th of April. Dam Millie Sampson won 8 from 25 race day starts which included a 3rd placing behind the flying Venus Serena in the NZ Yearling Sales Series final of 2014. This is also the family of the 19-time winner in Quite A Delight (Bettorās Delight) and the 14-time winner in Nurburgring (Bettorās Delight) Another class family to keep tabs on.
