Welcome in to our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
The trials and workouts taking place at Ashburton on the 3rd of December see some competitive fields and numbers presented along with a scattering of notable bloodlines. Runners of interest tomorrow include
Major Li (Art Major – Mau Lu Li) Itās fitting that we cover this Barron trained runner as itās the time of year that we see plenty of grass track racing – and the dam involved here was handy when produced on grass tracks.
Major Li showed enough last week in a learners heat at Rangiora and will look to improve from another pace around at Ashburton.
As mentioned, Mad Lu Li was a nice performer, winning 5 times with a brace of victories at both Banks Peninsula and Geraldine included in her racing record – Major Li is her first foal. The maternal line traces back to the mother of class performers Letitia Franco and Winstone P in Lotta Talk (Talk About Class).
Major Li could be one for the grass tracks if the breeding is anything to go by.
The Gypsy King (One Over Da Moon – Shpeedy) This Thomas trained runner, as his name suggests, will be looking to knock out race rivals at short notice – and thereās enough breeding behind him to suggest heāll be competitive going forward.
Dam Shpeedy collected 4 wins and 11 minor placings from a career that spanned some 84 starts while the wider family includes Suntaradon, a 3-time winner by Sundon. A distant line of the family includes the 8-time winner in Sir George Grey.
Sire One Over Da Moon has met with limited success as a sire – albeit with limited numbers. His winners include the consistent Paige and Hanover Da Moon alongside the recent winner in One Mhor For Heather.
The Gypsy King trots home at Chertsey trials on the 19th of November
Ballerini (American Ideal – Caribbean Blue) Another 2yr-old to focus on. Ballerini is due to take her place in the 7th of the day. Dam Carribean Blue was unraced but has met with some success as a mother leaving a number of strong Australian based performers including Yankee Lincoln (12 wins) Miss Blue Glory (9 wins) and Caribbean Lily (6 wins).
Magic Four, a 6-time winner by Bettorās Delight, did most of his racing out of the barn of Robert and Jenna Dunn.
Itās a class family thatās produced a plethora of feature victories in the past.
Ballerini produces some nice work from the parked position at Ashburton on the 19th of November.
