Welcome in to our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
The trials and workouts taking place at Ashburton on the 19th of November include a number of runners of interest based on their breeding, these include –
Cuban Chrome (Always B Miki – Helenka Franco) The J Hay barn hasnāt been heard of for some time but will appear tomorrow with this son of Always B Miki due to take part in the 1st of the day. The juvenile impressed on the 22nd of October, scoring in a learners pace after producing some slick final sectionals.
Dam Helenka Franco was lightly tried with Cuban Chrome being her first foal.
Granddam Hunter Franco has been a successful mother with noted performers out of the mare including the 10-time winner Franco Hendrix (Falcon Seelster) and the now 20-time winner in Franco Hampton (Christian Cullen) Kiwi audiences will also remember Regulus, a son of Mach Three who performed well against age-group company during his time on NZ soil.
Cuban Chrome looks the goods for J Hay.
Nasana (Bettorās Delight – Nakuru) Another juvenile worth following, this daughter of Bettorās Delight is trained out of the Greg Payne stable and has already had a sound grounding at workouts in the middle of 2024. Mother Nakuru won 3 herself and is a daughter of Christian Watch with Code Black, Shanika, and Miss Daisy names from her progeny that would be familiar to harness racing fans.
Nasana works home well when behind the impressive Strikem in March
Calmbeforethestorm (Majestic Son – Begin) Tornado Valley was a trotting star and hereās another potential prospect from the same dam. This filly is the latest out of the Sundon mare Begin and certainly comes with the required breeding to be winning a few out on the track.
Calmbeforethestorm shares bloodlines with the Inter Dominion champion Tornado Valley and the smart Steel Dust, a son of Majestic Son, making her a full sister.
Bullit Train, a recent winner out of the Mark Jones stable but formerly trained by Terry McMillan, is also out of the mare making this a breed that knows where the winning post is situated.
Calmbeforethestorm is a close relation to the champion trotter Tornado Valley, seen here running third in the Gr3 4&5 Yr Trotting Championship of 2017.
