Welcome in to our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
Thereās a bumper set of trials and workouts taking place at Rangiora on the 30th of October which, as usual, showcase some fine bloodlines and their talking points. Those that catch the eye include
Nellie Doyle (Majestic Son – Perfect For Now) Part of a fine trotting family. This 5yr-old mare from the Trathen stable is set to go around in the 1st of the day. Dam Perfect For Now won 5 herself when racing out of the Smith stables but is yet to leave a winner as a mother.
The depth of this breed further back is impressive with grandam Look being mother to the great Some Direction (Sundon) along with being mother to Total Perception (7 wins) and Now Another Look (6 wins) Some real trotting power that hopefully rubs off on Nellie Doyle.

Times Like These (Always B Miki – Bird Of Paradise) Barry Ward has always had a nice broodmare thatās producing winners out on the track and, in Bird Of Paradise, he may find another great producer. This 2yr-old colt closed late on the pegs when going around at Motukarara workouts in early October and takes up a spot in heat 3 at Rangiora.
Dam Bird Of Paradise impressed on the track herself winning 13 times in a career that included a competitive 4th in the Gr3 Leonard Memorial as a juvenile.

Kotare Rata (Always B Miki – Kotare Mist) Set to stroll around late in the card in a workers pace, this Houghton trained filly is one to take notes on. While dam Kotare Mist only won a solitary race from 11 race day appearances the wider family has done a fine job.
The 8-time winner Biella Star and 6-time winner Kotare Mahal (Mach Three) were progressive enough types in their careers while Kotare Mach, winner of over $200ā000, and Givemefiveminutesmore, winner of 9, are other names of note that are from the same bloodlines.
