Welcome into our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
This week we delve into the trials and workouts to take place Ashburton on Tuesday the 20th and, as usual, there are plenty of interesting bloodlines appearing.
Impressive Shard (Captain Crunch – Pemberton Shard) Fresh off an outstanding day at Oamaru, the Mowbray stable lines this filly up in the first of the day. There are no prizes for knowing a little bit about the wider family – itās one of quality thatās been catching the eye for some time. Dam Pemberton Shard was a wonderful mare, winning 11 races and amassing some $229ā000 in prize money during her career, her best victory arguably being a win in the Gr2 Premier Mares Championship of 2015 when beating Willow and Venus Serena. Pemberton Shard also achieved a number of minor placings in Gr1 company.
As a mother Pemberton Shard has left the exciting Vanquish Stride (Bettorās Delight) the winner of 12, and the current performer in Moet Shard (Bettorās Delight).
Impressive Shard is out of the lovely mare Pemberton Shard, shown here winning against a great field in 2015.
Franco Motu (Always B Miki – Motu Time To Shine) The McRae stable is always to be respected when arriving on track and this son of Always B Miki could be the next of their runners to carry support. Franco Motu will appear in the 5thĀ of the day after tasting that winning feeling in a workout last week. Dam Motu Time To Shine had a handy racing record, winning 3 times in a 19 start career. Franco Motu is the second foal out of the dam after Motu B MyttyĀ (Always B Miki).
Franco Motu impressed in a recent workout.
Santa Cruz (Sunshine Beach – Cullens Counsel) An interesting watch when you consider the breeding, this Lethaby trained son of Sunshine Beach is out of the mother to the 3-time winner Chambray while another daughter of Cullens Counsel, Teak, has impressed in Australia, winning 5 races so far. Further back in the damline youāll find Classic Blue Jeans (Camluck), the mother to Attorney General, a Gr2 winning son of Falcon Seelster – that accomplishment achieved in the Franklin Cup of 2004.
Santa Cruz has the bloodlines to impress on the track, heās seen here in a workout from July.
