Welcome into our Speed In The Breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look into the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the features races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success- how the great families continue to leave the very best.
A look at the AshburtonĀ trials and workouts on the 11thĀ of June sees some great bloodlines presented.
The very best of these would includeā¦
DāCash (Always B Miki – Lendusaquid) An interesting watch, this McDowell trained runner does have the breeding to impress once getting to the track. Having caught the eye in a qualifying trial at the end of 2023 DāCash will once again appear at Ashburton on Tuesday. The daughter of Always B Miki is a close relation to the 1.50 pacer in Late Mail, a son of Bettorās Delight who won 4 on NZ soil before being exported to North America. Further back through the damline youāll find the mother of Roydon Scott (18 wins) and Roydon Glen (22wins) in Roydon Dream. Ā If DāCash is to have any of the family ability about her then itāll be a great ride for connections!
DāCash winning a qualifying trial in December of 2023.
Sweet Betty (Sweet Lou – Mermaid Explorer) Exploring the racetrack under workout conditions for the first time is this runner out of the S OāReilly stable – in fact this daughter of Sweet Lou could well be the first runner to get to the track proper from the stable. Sweet Betty is the second foal out of the mare while the family is well connected – grandam Corbie, a daughter of Black Watch, is known for her ability to leave a star of the track with Agios Nikolaos (8 NZ victories), the mother of Lauraella in Black Maire (Falcon Seelster), the 5-time winner in Zingara, and the 8-time winner in Bagger Vance (Falcon Seelster) all being among her progeny.
Memphis Blaster (Bettorās Delight – Memphis Melody) Itās been a while since weāve seen the W Higgs name at the trials but he produces this strongly bred son of Bettorās Delight in a workout pace towards the end of the card. Thereās plenty to live up to for the 3yr-old as he counts the speed freaks Stylish Memphis (15 wins) Delightful Memphis (20 wins) Virginia Lightning (13 wins) and Harley Earl (10 wins) among his siblings – and that list could be added to by any number of known racetrack performers.
Itās a standout family when it comes to one thing – winning at pace.
Memphis Blaster needs to get going places fast if heās to emulate some of his famous siblings.
Aldebaran Redwood (Father Patrick – Another Love) Itās the next potential star off the Another Starlet conveyor belt. Trained by Murray Alfeld, Aldebaran Redwood will look to continue the strong winning habit laid down by his siblings, notably the 5-time winner in Aldebaran Floss (Muscle Mass) and the Gr1 winner Aldebaran Keepa (Kadabra), that result coming in the Victorian Trotting Oaks 2022.
There are very few slow ones out of this family – the magnificent Enghien (Love You) Jazz Legend (Holdontomyheart) and Millburn Michael (Holdontomyheart) also call the extended family home.
Connections of Aldebaran Redwood will be hoping the son of Father Patrick possesses the Gr1 winning abilities of close relation Aldebaran Keepa
