Welcome in to our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
Addington trials are set to take place on Wednesday with plenty of fields to get through. Notable runners based on their bloodlines include
Volstone (Volstead – Gemstone) The Dunn stable isnāt short on powerful trotting types and this 3yr-old gelding could well be one you want to follow in times to come. Dam Gemstone went winless from some 16 starts but left the impressive Woodstone (11 wins) as her second foal, adding the 2-time winner in Majestical as her third.
The family is best known through the exploits of a distant relation Africa (Chiola Hanover) winner of 11 on NZ soil including a Gr1 placing in the Inter Dominion Trotting Final of 1999.
Volstone winner a qualifying trot in March of this year.
November Nine (Sky Major – Anna Ivy) Sky Major is kicking goals at the moment and this filly from the Barron stable also possesses a nice maternal line to back up the siring prowess. Dam Ann Ivy won twice in a limited career and has already left the now 12-time winner in Anna Love (Terror To Love)
The maternal line extends further back to Anna Livia, mother to the sub-1.50 performers Ana Malek and Ana Afreet, both by Bettorās Delight.
With a strong damline in tow expect November Nine to possess some real ability.
November Nine works home well in a workout pace recently.
Kasarani (Sweet Lou – Mashika) Youād be hard pressed to find a stable going better than the Todd barn at the moment – Marketplace being his obvious triumph of late. That being said this 3yr-old filly should have plenty to off also.
This is a fine family too with dam Mashika winning two while also currently possessing a 100% strike-rate of foals to winners as a broodmare, the best known of her progeny possibly being Tanzania, a close-up runner up at Rangiora last week when beaten by Bryceās Meddle.
Zambia, a 10-time winner was the first foal out of Mashika too. Itās a family of depth and quality and Kasarani should from the historic bloodlines too.
