The National Weanling Sale run by NZB at Karaka is being held this Thursday (May 23) – and interest is starting to build.
As always, Alabar have a strong and well prepared draft in the harness racing sale.
The sale was been a happy hunting ground for purchasers with, in recent years, Alabar selling the likes of the multiple Gr1 winning Australian trotter Majestuoso, the $1 million Nullarbor winner Betterzippit, the exciting WA mare Turn The Page and the rising NZ star Alta Meteor.
The influence of sales graduates can only continue to grow as, already in NZ this year, 11 Alabar weanling sale graduates have performed in the early season 2yo races and trials.
This year’s Alabar draft is impressive. Their consignment of 49 weanlings includes 16 out of black-type performing race mares headed by the Gr1 winners Veste (NZ Caduceus Club 2yo Classic) and Daenerys Targaryen (Vic Redwood Classic) plus the $100,000 winners Annie Morva, La Joconde and Samantha Q.
All told, the Alabar draft features brothers and sisters to no less than 21 $100,000
The star lots include:
Lot 1 – Elite Stride – Daenerys Targaryen colt
By an exciting young sire, whose first crop yearlings were hot property in Melbourne this year selling for up to $42,500, this colt is out of a Gr1 Redwood Classic winner and is a half-brother to the promising 3yo, Dragonstone.
Lot 7 – Art Major – Delightful Brigade colt
Art Major’s progeny are on fire on the racetracks at the moment. This Art Major son is bred on the same cross as Merlin and is out of a full-sister to the three-time Kaikoura Cup winner, Classie Brigade.
Lot 20 – Art Major – Flying Mrs Williams filly
The first ever filly of her dam, this filly is a full-sister to this season’s Young Guns Heat winner, Demon Blue and is a half-sister to the top NZ juvenile and big USA winner, Flying Even Bettor.
Lot 29 – Art Major – Jemma filly
This filly is the first foal of the speedy (Sweet) Jemma (1:55). Being by Art Major out of a daughter of Helena Jet (13 NZ wins, $164,096) she is a full-sister in blood to Nicolas Cage (1:50.9)
Lot 32 – Art Major – La Joconde colt
This first dam fills the pedigree page on this strong Art Major colt. He is out of the top WA race-filly and mare La Joconde ($153,285) and is a full or half-brother to five black type performers including the Gr1 winner Alta Orlando ($1,153,568)
Lot 36 – Majestic Son – Letz Hope filly
This daughter of champion sire Majestic Son, is a full-sister to the rising star WA trotter, Our Maestoso (multiple Gr winner and winner of 13 of 16 starts to date). Her dam won six and is out of a half-sister to Our Sunny Whiz (Rowe Cup)
Lot 42 – Captain Crunch – Millie Sampson filly
By a sire who’s really impressing with his first 2yo’s this season, this filly is from the good racemare Millie Sampson (1:56.1, 8 NZ wins, $85,051) whose first three foals are all black type performers.
Lot 46 – Captain Crunch – Monkee Around filly
A beautiful type, this filly is from a young Art Major mare who’s a three-quarter sister to the quality WA filly and mare, Turn The Page (2nd WA Oaks) and out of a full-sister to the dual NZ Cup winner Monkey King ($2.7 million)
Lot 54 – Always B Miki – Oranje filly
The first filly from a full-sister to the brilliant NZ mare, The Orange Agent (6 Gr1 victories, NZ 3yo Filly of the Year). This filly is bred on the same Always B Miki over a Western Ideal line mare cross that produced the outstanding Aardies Express.
Lot 60 – Always B Miki – Princess Arts filly
From a great fillies family, this daughter of Always B Miki is out of Princess Arts (1:55.9, 3rd Southland Oaks) and is a half-sister to the Gr2 Franklin Cup winner, Alta Wiseguy. The 2yo half-sister (Iron Heart) is an impressive trial winner in NZ season to date.
Lot 65 – Captain Crunch – Samantha Q filly
A daughter of the very good USA racemare, Samantha Q (1:53, $130,597, 2nd Adioo Volo), this filly is a half-sister to six black type performers including Alta Intrigue ($260, 594). The grandam of this filly won the US Breeders Crown.
Lot 71 – Always B Miki – Starlitart filly
An absolute pedigree highlight for the sale, this filly is from a full-sister to top pacer Star Galleria (1:52.9, $509,388). Starlitart is only the second filly of her dam, the other being the outstanding broodmare Star Of Venus (dam of Self Assured, NZ Cup, $2.1 million)
Lot 75 – Bettor’s Wish – Surfsupsomewhere filly
This filly represents a beautiful pedigree, being by a champion son of Bettor’s Delight out of a Somebeachsomewhere mare. Not only is this proven cross presented, there is also a 4×4 duplication of Cam Fella. This is the family of the USA Filly and Mare of the Year, She’s A Great Lady.
Lot 80 – Vincent – There’s A Dancer colt
A standout individual, this colt is from a smart race-filly who has already left five black type performers including Ocean Ridge ($1:49.8, $443,005) and McClinchie ($394,008). The grandam is NZ Oaks winner, There’s A Franco.
Lot 82 – Lazarus – Tristar Brigade colt
The only Lazarus in the sale, this colt is a three-quarter brother to Parmesan (1:49.8, $201,486) and is from a full-sister to Trigirl Brigade ($143,711), the dam of Classie Brigade (3 Kaikoura Cups).
Lot 84 – Captain Crunch – Veste filly
It’s not often that you get to opportunity to purchase a filly has is out of a Gr1 winner that has produced a Gr1 winner. Being by Veste (Caduceus Club Classic) and a three-quarter sister to five black type performers including It’s All About Faith (NZSS 3yo Final) – that’s what this filly presents.
Lot 88 – Captain Crunch – Western Willow colt
By the impressive young sire in Captain Crunch, this good looking colt is out of a winner producing, Western Ideal daughter of the great One Dream (NZ 2 & 3yo Filly of the Year) – the dam also of the Gr1 winner, Montana D J
Lot 89 – Art Major – Wicklow Star colt
A precocious looking son of Art Major, this colt is from a race winning three-quarter sister to two tremendous performers in Gaius Caesar (Gr1 Len Smith Mile, $550,456) and Hail Christian (25 wins and 3rd in the Chariots Of Fire)
Lot 95 – Art Major – Annie Morva filly
A full-sister to the 1:56 3yo filly (Major Annie) and a three-quarter sister to Acushla Machree (1:55 as a 3yo), this filly is out of the smart racemare, Annie Morva (1:52.9, $146,823) who ran second to Adore Me in the Gr2 Ladyship Stakes.
Lot 97 – Always B Miki – Arma Nightingale colt
One of the best types in the draft, this colt is bred on the same cross as the Gr1 NZSS 2yo Final winner, Franco Indie. A full or half-brother to four black type performers, his dam is a race winning half-sister to the two big earning performers (Our) London Pride and London Express.
Lot 106 – Zenith Stride – Cyclone Emily colt
A lovely individual this colt is from the first crop of the Peter Haughton Final winning son of Muscle Hill, Zenith Stride. This is the family of Glenferrie Typhoon (Gr1 Great Southern Star) and this season’s exciting Victorian 3yo trotter, Derek The Jet.
Virtually all the leading Alabar sires are represented in the draft with 10 by Always B Miki, 7 by Art Major, 2 by Bettor’s Wish, 9 by Captain Crunch, 1 by Elite Stride, 1 by Lazarus, 4 by Majestic Son, 2 by Ride High, 10 by Vincent and 3 by the new trotter Zenith Stride.
There will be a parade of the full Alabar draft at Karaka on Wednesday 22 May at 1:30pm (followed by a parade of the Woodlands weanlings).
The sale starts at 12pm on Thursday 23 May.
