The scratching of Millwood Nike in the New Zealand Pacing Oaks increases Steve and Amanda Telfer’s chances of taking out the Group One harness racing feature.
“It’s always unfortunate when a great filly like that is sidelined with injury. I hope it’s not too serious and she’s back racing soon, but it does give our fillies a more realistic chance of finishing in the finish,” Steve said.
Both Kahlua Flybye (Bettor’s Delight) and Aardiebytheseaside (Downbytheseaside) have good draws and both have winning chances.
“The 2600 metres puts a different aspect on the race. Both our fillies have good gate speed and should be able to find themselves somewhere near the front end.”
Kahlua Flybye will be handled by Tony Herlihy who last won the Oaks in 2006 driving Western Dream.
“Her chance of getting a nice cheque is to get a good trailing position and being able to sprint home at the finish.”
Aardiebytheseaside who will be driven by Tim Williams will run from gate three and is a noted front runner.
“She’s got the all-round game with gate speed, is a big strong filly and I don’t think the 2600 metres will worry her. She should find herself in a good spot from that barrier. Tim’s got options with her.”
Telfer says the southern team reports that both horses have come through their last run well and have improved.
“All points towards them running a good race on Sunday.”
After tomorrow’s race both fillies will remain in work.
“One or two of our fillies may go down to the Invercargill Cup meeting for the three year old fillies race and then progress through to the four year old mares races in early January.”
Ohoka Connor will also represent the stable tomorrow in the Group One New Zealand Derby.
“I’m pleased with him. He’s answered every test we’ve thrown at him. It’s a big one this Sunday against the best ones in the country. It’s unfortunate with the draw. The horse is well. Tim (Williams) will be hoping for some luck and that the horse can work his way into the race at some stage.”
